CNN) — In the run up to the Paris Olympics, athletes have been stepping up their preparations in order to maintain their edge over competitors.

But for Australia’s Matt Dawson, those preparations looked a little different this year, with the field hockey player opting to have part of his finger amputated in order to compete in the Games.

The 30-year-old Dawson injured the ring finger of his right hand after being struck by a hockey stick in a practice match just two weeks before he was due to represent the Kookaburras in Paris in what would be his third Olympic appearance.

The impact left the top of his finger almost entirely severed and had his Olympic dreams hanging in the balance……

WNT was always going to field a strong team
The only question was whether they could gel with new manager in time
All signs look good

(Your turn MNT)
Watching replay now, I’m not sure there’s much to take away here. Zambia was hopelessly disorganized in defense. Obviously some of that is US combo play unlocking the defense, but there was very little communication and defenders were always late to close on dangerous possession
v Ger will be a much different match

getting goals from Mal Swanson and Rodman will bode well for the remainder of the tourney.

Mallory is a difference maker up top. ( we missed her for WC play due to injury )

Definitely
3 goals with Soph Smith just facilitating is great (she’s such a gentle assassin)
Hopefully she’s good to go but being able to sub Williams for her is not a bad problem

Watching the live opening ceremony at 1:30 est or NBC broadcast at 7:30?

We are probably going to record the 1:30 and watch it around 6 or so

I always get a bit burned out during the March of Nations
