Yeah, and things that Payton might not have done. He would have gone for the throat, swept the leg, and put them down with a play action pass from Brees to Graham or a surprise end around. It was the safe call, but I miss the days when Payton would have gone for the throat and ended the game right there.
I remember the play you're talking about.. Saints get a safety, up by 3 in a division game that puts us back in the hunt for the playoffs.. Just run out the clock, and end it. What does Payton do? He "goes for the throat" and calls a double-reverse..
We fumble. We lose.
Payton said he learned from the kind of mistakes you are describing in your post.
