Pats Lose Tyrone McKenzie For The Year
Posted by Mike Florio on May 6, 2009, 2:57 p.m.

For anyone who thinks that the offseason underwear practices aren’t fraught (I love that word) with risk, think again.

According to Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe, the Patriots have lost linebacker Tyrone McKenzie for the season, due to a knee injury suffered during the team’s rookie minicamp.

McKenzie, a third-round pick in the 2009 draft, has a torn ACL.

I’ll be posting something later today about how McKenzie will be compensated for the coming season, given that he has yet to sign an NFL contract.

Bottom line? Offseason, preseason, in-season, or postseason, serious injuries can and do happen in the NFL at any phase of the football year.
Wow, sucks for that kid. :covri:

Close call, I kept picking him up with the Saints 4th round pick in my mock drafts

Two years in a row they draft an OLB in the 3rd to help their pass rush, and the guy gets hurt very early.

I forgot all about Shawn Crable, alot of people were high on him coming out of that draft

Sucks for him and the Patriots, but I don't feel sorry for either.

We're no strangers to draft picks not even seeing the field the first year either. All he can do is become a sponge, soaking up all the knowledge he can while watching from the sidelines.

He could be very good for them..unfortunately.....Maybe he is one of the reason why they traded Vrabel.

I forgot about Crable too. Any word on his recovery? And was his done before the contract was signed too?

Being that I think the Patriots are cheats, I find it interesting that the "developmental" players that have high ceilings, but need some refining always seem to end up on IR quickly. Yet many former players say that players on the Patriots IR list practice on a regular basis.

Not saying that this is the case with McKenzie, but isn't it kind of strange that this happens a LOT to the Patriots mid to late round draft picks? Everyone is talking about waiting for the Patriots to cut some of these rookies they drafted... will there be any good ones that don't end up on IR?

I am sure all draft choices have some kind of insurance. I t will be interesting to see the follow up article to this story. I am curious how he is compensated since he hasn't actually signed his contract. I wonder who or if the Pats will bring in to take his place. Maybe a guy like Larry Foote? You know N.E. always has something up their sleeve.

Even if that's the case, you can't get mad at the Patriots for being smarter than everyone else.
