Per Underhill Winston deal could count against comp picks (1 Viewer)

I can't see him affecting the potential 3rd round pick we should get for Bridgewater even if he maxes out at 4M or whatever his incentives would bring him to. I would think that would take away the 6th round pick we should get for Klein. We'd likely trade that pick anyway or use it on a long-shot DT we want to try out at H-back or punt returner.
Everyone seems to assume that Winston will come in if Drew gets hurt. Their going to be really surprised when it’s Taysom’s time to play!
when Bridgewater came in Taysom’s gadget playing decreased drastically such you cannot afford to lose the backups, backup! I think we all see If Drew goes down that it’s Taysom’s turn to lose the job to Winston. He will be on a short leash but he will get the shot.

I don't disagree with this. I was hesitant to say Taysom IS going to be our next starter until his interview after signing the 2 year 21 million dollar deal. Finally, he basically came straight out and said that he will be our QB when Drew hangs it up. Before that, it was a lot of enuendo and almost-saids. So, okay... I'll finally agree that the plan is for Taysom to be our starting QB after Drew.

But I'd like to add... It won't be handed to him. He will have to win that starting job against all-comers. That includes this year. If Winston beats him in camp, then he'll be the next man up this season, just like Teddy was last year. And that's as it should be. The best 11 players on the field, and that includes QB. Heck, Drew said that he comes into every camp like he's competing for the starting job. That sounds silly because Drew is obviously going to be the best QB on any team he'd be on. But it is the correct mind-set.

But for Taysom, it's double-true. This year, next year, and every year after that. He is not Drew Brees. If he wants to be the starter, or in this year's case... the true back-up. Then he should be able to beat any and all QBs we have on the roster competing for that job. And in my honest opinion, against Jameis Winston... that's a TALL order. Off-field issues aside, he's a Saint now, so just like when Romo went to the booth... He's no longer a QB for a hated rival, so I can be honest. Winston is a very good QB. One of the best in the league going by arm talent alone. He has some issues to clean up (obviously), but he's good. I'd put him in easily in the top 3rd at the position in the NFL with his ceiling being top 5 or even top 3.

Can Taysom top that? I guess we're going to see.

Your avatar of a son and dad (you?) wearing #9. Not sure I'd want my son sporting a #2 in the future. It may be a hard nosed business for the owners but it is a sport for the fans and character counts. In my reading JW has never accepted any responsibility. He says what his agent coaches him to say but I have never seen any actual contrition. I'm not fond of entitled celebrity. His interview was effective but he stumbled when he tried to do humbled.

The Uber driver's complaint was very believable and if you read it the part about his verbal altercation with strangers swearing and yelling racial epithets is almost as disturbing as thinking he can maul an uber driver because he is an NFL QB.

Until he takes ownership of his past I''m not in a forgiving mood. As someone else pointed out He is No Teddy. I'd have no problem putting a #5 of my son.

I only have a few NFL players on my list of "great guys" with Drew. When men are that good, it stands out and should be appreciated.
That being said... in most cases, I don't combine on-field and off-field for the players I like or dis-like. Football is separate for me. I know that not everyone feels this way. Heck, we go to Angola's prison rodeo now and then and cheer for rapist and murderers. Now, when a players off-field behavior actually effects a team? THAT I'm strongly against. But to tell the truth, I judge football players by football as much as possible. What happens on Sunday is why I watch the game. I don't look for these guys to be role models for me or my kids. Some, like Drew are so great that they trump that.

As far as the jersey... yeah, that's me and my youngest. And no, I imagine we'll never wear a Winston Jersey. But truthfully? I'm not a jersey guy. We'll probably still be wearing those toilet bowl lid jersey 20 years from now. lol. Well, that's not true. I've shrunk 45 lbs in the past year so I'll prolly have to get a new one. If I buy one this year, it'll be #9. If I buy one next year? who knows. Won't be Winston. I'm not THAT forgiving.

But I get and totally respect your opinion.

Much ado about nothing

I agree with you 100%.

i just think that Winston has a ways to go in our system in terms of learning it and running it. We all know it’s complicated and I will not buy into the thought that Sean will have a different playbook for JW. That would only happen if Drew went down and Winston took over and could not handle the original playbook. So Hill has an upper hand from the jump which is why he deserves a shot at starting if it came up.
I see Winston as a very cheap 3rd string QB that will allow CSP to continue using TH to his best benefit. They all know it’s a very good possibility that TH May get hurt before DB due to his aggressive type of play. If this happens in steps JW. He is the best type of security blanket we can have.
I do like JW’s mindset that he is here to learn from the best to help improve his game and life. He never said he was here to take over the #2 position! What JW’s biggest and worst enemy is, is his bad decision making. Yes he has a great arm, but when he starts making bad decisions they seem to come in droves and he cannot stop them. This is where he can sit back and learn how to handle the adversity of the problems by watching and learning what Drew does. I would love to see JW get some TH plays thrown in for him to get into the huddle and learn what its really like to see Drew operate under pressure. Everyone who’s ever played with Drew has always said how he is joe cool in the huddle no matter what they are facing.

Maybe. But the drinks/snacks thing did not seem to be a big deal. Reporters just wanted to make it a big deal.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal to you and I, but how about to Goodell and his petty self? I’m pretty sure that it struck a nerve with him and that’s exactly what Payton was aiming to do.

the bigger mystery, for me, than how the comp picks work, is why the owners don't insist on complete transparency on these types of issues. Besides injuries the biggest thing hurting the NFL's overall product is perceived biases.

from the moment you decide you are going to start "awarding" something like extra picks, the very first conversations should be about fair and transparent processing.

I see OTC has the Saints only getting a 3rd next year for Teddy as they have JW offsetting Klein.

These guys are usually right about comp picks. I thought JW was after the deadline?

Underhill checked after seeing that on OTC. This was his response.

Thanks for that, but I still have a question though.

JW is still listed as a signee for 2020 when he should not been as he was signed after the cutoff date. OTC is showing we gained 2 and lost 3, so it wouldn't matter what JW hit is, we would still only get one pick. I guess phrase my questions funny, you know what I mean? lol
