PFF grading system appears unclear (1 Viewer)

It's the best we got. No one else comes close to this level of detail beyond the stats. Of course they will get things wrong. They don't know assignments, but over a large enough sample, if a guy is getting his butt kicked it will show.

Now don't go around claiming this 70 guy is clearly better than this 65 guy. Way too much noise for that. I also think some grades are fundamentally flawed so must be taken into perspective. Like a #1 shadow man corner getting an average season grade is actually awesome because the daily competition he faces.

Calling it complete trash is just as bad as holding it as gospel. It's a tool that must be understood and used correctly.

Does PFF take into account a NT facing 2 blockers and a 3tech DT facing 1 blocker in their grades?

Here's a great article on how their grading system works. General rule of thumb if either of us know about it, I would imagine professionals that make a living do as well.

Unfortunately that is exactly what happens...
This is why I agree with JJ Watts comment about PFF!

The thing is why should we care about an arbitrary grade from a 3rd party when the professionals don't? Coaches grade their players because they know what to grade them on and other teams use tape and scouting reports to prepare for their weekly opponents. So can PFF grades really be a tool if the people who the tool matters to is more accurate? PFF grades are for media and fans only..lol. The problem gets to the last point; people using PFF grades as gospel.

That said, I will never put down the objective data that PFF provides. Their analytics are pretty top notch from what I've heard.

Of course it's for the fans. I cant speak about it professionally, but apparently people use it. If you don't care about performance metrics than yeah you wouldn't care. If you do, it's the only available metric that actually reviews film. Most fan don't have time to watch film on players.

Just as much as you can disagree with someone's film evaluation, PFF can be wrong. Most of the time it's pretty clear win loss. Over time you'll get a decent idea of their performance.
