Quick thoughts on Chris Olave pick and what happened w/ pick #49 {2022 thread bumped} (1 Viewer)

Made this point in another thread yesterday. So much of this happens - teams, scouts, agents, players, etc. get a really good idea of directly who wants who.

Sadly, this knowledge leaked and got used against us, and it very well could have been the result of us and the Lions coaching staff being too chummy with each other, or Allen being way too direct and trusting with the player to hold this info.

I don't doubt that it happens, but I think it's more of teams incorrectly assessing.

To my knowledge, Teams do mock drafts....a lot of them...like a TON of them. They look at the landscape of other teams, arses them, and determine who they are likely to pick based on needs/must/wants etc. In those mocks they try to account for every scenario that may take place and then they build a plan around it.

The Saints probably didn't expect the Bears to take a S there, perhaps had them eyed for something different. I don't remember the energy around the post, I think we took a while to get to the podium and make a selection and I deduced it was because they really expected to have Brisker and they suddenly scrambled to look at their board.

The Saints and other teams do run mock drafts to develop contingency plans. That's why I don't they suddenly scramble when their primary target is picked right before their pick.

What I think most likely happens is that they know who their backup pick is, but they'd rather try to trade down instead, so they start calling teams, who've they've already preliminarily discussed possible trades with, to see if they can finalize a trade. They keep trying to get a trade until the clock's running out, at which point they make their backup selection.

I just don't see the Saints not having already thought out a bunch of contingency plans for each of their picks, because there's a very slim chance that get any of their primary targets at any pick beyond the 1st round. They'd have to be complete idiots not to have predetermined what they would do if their target was taken right before their pick and I don't think they are very much the opposite of idiots.

One more instance of Underhill knowing very little about the inner workings of the Saints. That or he’s purposely putting out information because Mickey says to.

As I reread this interesting thread, takeaways are that:

(1) Taylor has proven to be a good piece for the defense, and probably at a solid high 3rd round level starter (even having been taken in the 2nd), i.e. not close to a pro bowler but that's no slight.

(2) Sadly, the quest for DB's made Gardner-Johnson expendable, and I'll always believe they traded away their spirit animal and never were the same afterwards. He was a cap casualty and a scapegoat for DA.

(3) Also sadly, Brisker and Olave have had eerily similar experiences with concussions.

(4) Taylor and Brisker have very similar stats over 3 seasons.

(5) Artists' imaginary depictions of William of Ockham alternatively show both a cleanly-groomed face, and conversely, a five o'clock shadow.

I agree They do run mocks to play out various scenarios. I have heard Pat Kerwin say he participated in them going back to the mid 80’s when he was with the Bucs and later the Jets. Teams also share information on players among the group they are part of so I don’t think that who a team meets with is necessarily a player they are interested in but to share that info with other teams for a reciprocal report on another player.

Teams also have conversations with other teams for possible trades both up and down during the draft. They don’t tell the other team who they are targeting if they might want to move up for though. I would guess that close to 90% of those don’t happen.

We're overscrutinizing the wrong 1st round pick from that draft. We should be dissecting how we held on to an extra first for a player that didn't become servicable until year 3.
