Quinn Ewers met the Saints at the Combine [Mar 24: Saints hosted dinner with Ewers]

If we draft Ewers anywhere before round 4... I am going to immediately lose a lot of faith in this new Coaching staff. Nothing about him says "Future NFL franchise QB potential".

They didn't meet with just Ewers. They dinner was with multiple Texas players but Ewers is being pushed because the narrative the talking heads always default to during draft time is QBs.

I wouldn't have a problem taking a top-rated CB at 9 -- but only if Carter, McMillan, Graham and Jeanty are all gone by then.

Agreed. Barron is not the guy I ideally want, but if they think he can start as an outside CB or play the Slot/Star position in Staley's defense then I'd be good with the pick. I hate to spend another high draft pick at CB after what we invested for Kool-Aid and Taylor, but it's a really important position and we have a hole at one of the CB spots right now since we are likely to have 3 CBs on the field for most of games just like other NFL teams.

I've never been impressed with Ewers, but apparently he played with a torn oblique last year which limited him. But, if Jeff Howe is right, NFL scouts are apparently saying they see him as a day 2 pick. Could just be smoke or the scouts see something we don't.

Yesterday was Texas' pro day. 21 players worked out and among the top group are the players the Saints hosted. The Saints had a large contingent present.

As mentioned, Bo Davis has had two stints at Texas including working for Sark year before last, so the Saints probably felt at home in Austin, as they should forever since this is where Drew Brees grew up.

If its Ewers they are truly interested in, you hope they would use a 3rd round pick, but QB's are a premium so he may rise to 2nd round. Ewers badly needs at least 1 or 2 years of pro development. Ewers improved some in his 3 years at Texas. but too slowly. He ceiling'd out two years in a row in the college playoff. (I place zero relevance on his 1 year at Buckeye).

The thinking may be to create cross competition for Rattler to see if they can evolve into a natural 1 and 2. The Saints don't have capacity to pay a king's ransom for Cam Ward, so this is not illogical. Keeping Carr for another year helps the cap, and gives young guys time to develop.

You hope the Saints are looking hard at Matthew Golden and Jahdae Barron. I love the TE Gunnar Helm is a personal favorite as i've met and talked to him at an NIL event 18 months ago. (Helm may get picked anywhere from 4th to 7th round).

Recruiting analyst Jeff Howe is in the top group (OnTexasFootball) of recruting and coverage serices, run by Bobby Burton and Gerry Hamilton.

I would love to know where they ate dinner. Maybe they took the bacfk patio and ate at Shoal Creek Saloon. Longhorn players love that place, as do I.

Neither did Drew.

That's not really true. Brees had a great college career. He only fell to the 1st pick in the 2nd round because of his height and the fact that he played in an essentially Run N' Shoot offense in college under Joe Tiller.

He also fell because his "Super Power" was accuracy which is always very underrated as far as QB skills go. Which is interesting because there is a guy in this draft whose Super Power is accuracy, but nobody wants to take him in the 1st round.

So did they go to Chipotle?

Unlikely, but if they did, you hope they brought in some jumbo shrimp to put on top of the burrito bowl.

Does his name rhyme with Lyle McFord?

Nope. I'm talking about Shadeur Sanders. McCord has good accuracy and had a good completion percentage in college at 66.2% but Sanders has elite accuracy with a 71.8% completion percentage at Colorado.

I'm not saying we should take Sanders in the 1st or that Sanders has the commitment to the game that Brees had, but he is incredibly accurate. And the thing is that QBs that just distribute the ball in college are often overlooked because they don't take over games and don't do things that get them on highlight reels. I have some concerns with Sanders pocket presence, tendency to take sacks, tendency to back out of the pocket instead of stepping up, lack of a great arm, lack of great mobility, and fear he may have reached his ceiling and his attitude could rub some players the wrong way which will make it difficult for him to lead a team, but I do wonder if we fans, and maybe the scouts, are overlooking how important his elite accuracy is to the success of NFL QBs.

Maybe that's McCord too, but I haven't see much of him.

Give me Cam Ward with his rocket arm and great mobility to create off schedule plays over Sanders all day long. But I think we often underestimate how important Sanders' accuracy is.

Yep. Sanders had the best completion percentage in the nation last season.

There have been times that Ewers has looked like Aaron Rodgers. He has had moments of brilliance. The problem was consistency before his Junior year, and a decline during his Junior year. There’s a report that he was playing through a core injury last year and I’m inclined to believe it. If that is the case I’d take a chance on him.

I’m not saying it should be an early pick but at some point I’d consider him. I liked him more Rattler coming out.

Because of lack of willpower.
