I thought they just turned everything back in to the team. I didn't realize the players had to buy their jerseys.

I guess that's why you sometimes see players swapping their jersey with a friend playing on the other team. If they own the jersey, they can do whatever they want with them. But since I'm assuming they can't wear their friend's jersey in next week's game, they just have to remember to buy another team jersey for the next game.

I would imagine that if a player had a good enough reason to ask for a jersey the team would just offer it to him. “I scored my first touchdown in this jersey, can I have it?” Or better, “you scored your first touchdown today, any gear you wanna keep from today?”
