Saints went a bit against the grain this year it seems.
  • OT Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State (1.14): 9.63
  • CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama (2.41): 7.54
  • QB Spencer Rattler, South Carolina (5.150): 4.00
  • WR Bub Means, Pitt (5.170): 9.35
  • LB Jaylan Ford, Texas (5.175): 8.30
  • DT Khristian Boyd, UNI (6.199): 4.63
  • OT Josiah Ezirim, Eastern Kentucky (7.239): 8.50

Surprisingly PFN ranked the Saints RAS scores as 26th out of 32 teams.

Kidding. I think I remember hearing that Saints don’t use the RAS as much as we think. It just appeared that way.

But... how did they compile a RAS on Khristian Boyd when he didn't run due to a hamstring?

That's with two positions where RAS doesn't matter dragging down the average. That's almost as if we drafted a kicker and a punter. Their athletic ability really doesn't matter. A QB is for reading defenses and throwing the ball, especially in our offense. And our DT is a nose tackle, whose job is simply to eat up blocks. He's lumped in with DTs whose job is to be athletic penetrators. For his actual position of nose tackle, he is at least an above average athlete.

Omit those two guys and all you're left with is McKinstry with a RAS under 8. And he's only barely under 8. He was not 100 percent healthy during testing, and still ran well.

The late Bruce Miller (WGSO radio sports) quoted Bum Phillips at a 1985 training camp practice; subject was a rookie WR from LSU named Eric Martin.

Many doubted that Martin would thrive in the NFL because he wasn’t blazing fast. Bum’s response was that Eric Martin will do just fine in the NFL because

“…he’s a gamer!”

Bum Phillips recognized that intangible quality that a player brings to the table. He had full confidence in #84, and the rest is history. Martin had 18 100+ yds receiving games in his career. Eric is in the Saints HOF.

I believe that we have a few “gamers” in our 2024 draft class. Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Well stated.
Pretty neat that two of the best receivers in our team's history were 7th rounders.
