SUMMARY: A four-star defensive end recruit out of high school, Rick Leonard played football and lacrosse at Middletown, including two years on varsity at defensive end as he helped guide the team to their third straight Class 2A state championship in 2013 (14 sacks as a senior). He committed to Florida State and after two years as a reserve edge rusher (2.5 tackles for loss, no sacks), he transitioned to offensive tackle, starting 19 games at right tackle over his junior and senior seasons. It was Leonard’s first time playing on the offensive line since pee-wee so his tape is understandably inconsistent. He looks the part with adequate set-up quickness, but he lacks NFL length with wild hand placement and short, choppy steps in his kickslide. Leonard has shaky posture at contact due to straight-legs and high hips, negating his base strength. Overall, Leonard has room to improve at offensive tackle, but his balance issues will be tough to correct, making him a camp project only.

dane brugler's write up

Those weaknesses are pretty bad.

Strengths

Former defensive end with upside as he is still learning the position
Good quickness coming out of his stance and into his pass sets
Shows quickness to meet speed along the edge
Uses direct path in his pass punch and puts some pepper on it
Plays with inside hands and solid placement
Has strength to punch and extend
Choppy settle steps into targets as run blocker
Shows ability to get to second level targets
Has athletic ability that can be worked with by a coaching staff

Weaknesses
Consistently on skates
Base is inconsistent and balance is erratic
Spends a majority of his run blocks playing too far over his skis
Has to rely on hand strength and sheer will to sustain blocks
Lacks body control and falls off of run blocks in space
Over-strides on run blocks and struggles to redirect and catch inside moves
Can't bend effectively to create leverage point as run blocker
Pass sets lack patience and balance

Saints on their own

tyrell Cosby more proven, but Leonard has POTENTIAL due to athleticism (see Davenport, Marcus which means we are consistent). Not impressed today, but the Saints are sticking to their guns, so we seem to be happy with the options and must have written off Maurice Hurst for medical risk. Once burned, twice shy.

Without knowing anything about him specifically I would say the saints have MOSTLY done well at finding decent O line in the mid rounds. At the very least it should help to curb the inevitable OL injuries the team always seems to go through.

Heard of him didnt look at him hard though. Passes the eye ball test. Upside guy that was projected as a high priority UDFA. If he pans out it dobt matter how we got him. Eesh feels like a reach to me.

Always love O-line picks....
....but I am pretty ignorant to him....just by looking at the “talking heads” analysis of him, seems like a bit of stretch taking him in the 4th, not to mention it seemed odd that the front office took the entirety of its time to issue the pick....

I assume they were looking to trade down (and received no trades they liked)
