Roby extended (2 Viewers)

This is my take.
1st I said a while back Roby wasn't getting cut since we gave up a 3rd. That would be dumb.
2nd. Any of the guys that got restructured are basically off the table. All the converted money would hit the books this year. Loomis ain't stupid.
3rd. It will be mostly picks.
And 1 more. Why in the hell would we let CGJ go. We already lost MW. Losing another key piece to the D would be bad.
I also figure we get Mathieu and Landry.

Let's see if I'm close.
I like gettin Mathieu a lot, cause I think he can come in n help us on da backend right away.

I like Jarvis too, but IMO, he’s more of a possession WR. We’ll have Mike back, n if he’s back to “CGM” form, he’ll will be our #1 WR and top possession guy.

Clears cap space this year.

Last week, i said I was not impressed with Robys play at all last year. But I did add that, in his defense, he came to the team late, n w/o benefit of learning n playin in TC.

IIRC, had we cut Roby, it would’ve saved us about 10 mil. So : 1) What is the difference, between “restructuring” n an “extension” n 2) how much cap space was made with this “extension”?

Anybody?

Thanks in advance! 👍🏾

It's an extension because they added years to his current contract.

He had a $10 million cap hit which is too much for a #3 corner. I haven't seen the exact numbers of his contract but here is how they could lower his salary cap hit t from $10 million in 2022 to $4 million.

They could convert his $10 million salary into $1 million salary and a $9 million signing bonus. The $9 million is spread out over multiple years for salary cap purposes

2022: $3 mil Signing Bonus + $1 million salary = $4 million cap hit
2023: $3 mil Signing Bonus
2024: $3 mil Signing Bonus

The problem with doing this is the cap hits from the signing bonus don't go away. So if he's cut after the 2022 season he will have $6 mil in dead cap space.

So the Saints just created $6 million in cap space.

Ok, Thanks! 👍🏾

I was hoping for a savings of about 5 mil, so that’s good!

Again, I wasn’t all that impressed wit his play last year. But he’s got experience, n we NEED a #3 CB, so hopefully, wit a full year offseason wit the team, he’ll settle in n step up his game.

I don't think this has anything to do with Adebo, but it does remove CB as being a pressing need in the draft as our top 3 CBs are under contract. This is the type of move you make to save money and prepare if you plan on trading draft picks.

These numbers are made up. I was just showing what the Saints could do. I have not seen the official numbers on overthecap.com.

O ok, thanks 👍🏾

Ur numbers may well b different from the actual ones. But ur logic n reasoning make good sense. Instead of paying the entire 10 mil upfront, by “extending” Robys contract by, say a year, they can now split dat 10 mil into 2 seasons. They may have even given him some kinda “raise”. Even if it’s say, a mil, it’s now 11 mil that’ll b split into 2 years, at 5.5 per. Better than 10 mil upfront n a savings of 4.5 mil. Who knows, they might’ve given him even more.

But at the end of the day they were able to retain their #3 CB AND save a few mil in the process!

I am, too. I think he's expensive for a back-up corner. There's no shot I'm not starting Adebo opposite Lattimore on the outside, and Chauncey isn't coming out of the slot.

Unless they plan to play Chauncey at some traditional safety this year, and want to play Roby at slot while he does that, then this would be a really smart extension. I still think Chauncey will play a good bit of slot if he does play some SS/FS, but this gives us a ton of flexibility.

So, I just talked myself from being 'meh' on this to being quite good with it if my theory is correct.
It may be a bit pricey, but I'm also of the belief you can never have enough serviceable DBs on your team. He's not great, but he's also not a total disaster and if Lattimore or Adebo missed a few games I wouldn't be freaking out as if it was someone of Davante Harris caliber being asked to fill in.

Good move IMO. He cost us a 3rd this year and is a very good #3 CB who could start on a number of teams. As noted in an earlier post he also eliminates the need for another corner in the draft.
