He has groomed this unit, and they are playing perfectly......smart, aggressive, relentless, just doing it all at a high level.
And not just a guy or two, 8 deep has been beasts, every one of them.
Check out this interview from before the season.....so interesting to listen to him.
Love when he talks about how smart guys are.....and I love football lingo like “angle of departure” to talk about releasing from blocks.

Thanks for posting. I just realized that we went to the same high school in Simi Valley (Royal High School). He was a year older than me and I only went there my Senior year. Pretty cool though, Go Highlanders!

If the Saints make it deep into the playoffs this year, the improved D-line play will be a HUGE reason why. Right now they are making the whole defense better.

Our D-Line play has improved immensely under Ryan Nielsen. This was one of the best moves to bring in Nielsen to coach the D-Line in the Payton era. The man is a great teacher. I hope he is never poached from our coaching staff. What a great find.

This is the scenario I would like to see play out. DA get a HC position somewhere and Nielsen get promoted to DC. I believe he would be an amazing DC. He would bring in another like minded coach to continue what he started at D-Line coach.

But I’ve always wondered...knowing ALL of the nuances of defensive line techniques....wouldn’t always automatically equate to knowing DB schemes, or play calls.

I'm sure he's been around long enough and knows the concepts of our secondary, and that's why we have a coach for the secondary. All the different position group coaches and the DC all know what each group is doing. If not it would be complete kaos out on the field.
