It actually has been happening for years. They just denied it officially. New York would get in the head refs ear and the officials would huddle up as if they were discussing the call when really the head ref was just talking to New York.
The system may have been 'in place' for years, but it certainly hasn't been 'happening' to the extent that it should. While I can understand why they wouldn't want to use it for judgement calls like personal fouls, it should be used each and every time there is a question about someone who makes a catch or interception before the ball hits the ground, or other calls like whether two feet were in bounds with full possession of the ball, or if someone steps out of bounds while running down the sidelines.

They are already doing automatic reviews on any scoring play to assure that all requirements were met before awarding points. But in some cases a drive leading to a score has an officiating error that would have changed the outcome of the drive whether leading to a score or leading to a punt. There is just too much on the line (including gaming money) to let an obvious mistake go uncorrected. I believe that most fans would be in favor of taking this action even at the risk that their own team would be exposed occasionally.

Getting it right most of the time really isn't that hard to do.
