The Saints set two team defensive records in their 20-17 win over Carolina and have since extended one of them. They eclipsed the record of 9 consecutive games holding opponents to scoring 20 points or less in a game which they were tied with the 1991 Dome Patrol Defense.

The Saints have now held their opponents to 20 points or less in the last 11 consecutive games, the longest streak in club history.

Additionally, the Saints Defense didn't allow a touchdown by an opponent in 2023 until 1:16 remaining in week 2 against the Panthers, the longest such streak to start a season in team history. They went 58 minutes and 44 seconds to start the season without allowing a touchdown. They were the last team in the league to give up a touchdown in 2023. Additionally, the Saints started the 2023 season 2-0 for the 1st time in 10 years.

After 3 games played so far in 2023 the Saints Defense is playing very good. They rank #6, in Overall Team Defense, #8 in average Passing yardage allowed per game at 188, #10 in average rushing yardage allowed per game at 99.7, and #6 in Scoring allowed giving up an average of 16.7 points per game.

Had they not played soft zone prevent defense on that last Carolina drive they may have finished the game without allowing a touchdown. A successful onsides kick after the 2 point conversion could have spelled disaster. Playing the odds against the clock and score makes sense but still wound up making for a nervous ending.

Overall the Saints Defense is playing very good, not top in the league but in the top. Defensive penalties at crucial times cost the Saints a turnover, and continued the Panthers last drive leading to their touchdown. Both penalties were on Adebo. Also, the Saints are allowing to many average yards per carry in the ground game.

After 2 games the Saints Defense may not be at the top of the league in all statistical categories but anytime you hold your opponent under 20 points you have a great chance of winning the game. A 2-0 start for the 1st time in 10 years can't be made light of.
They did not play prevent, TCUDan points that out.

No they didn't play traditional prevent, they played soft zones that looked Mora'esque. Thankfully, onside kicks are near impossible if your name isn't Koo.
"The Saints came out playing quarters, went to a 3-cloud/4/4/2 look vs. 3x1, and played some Tampa 2 when Carolina crossed midfield"

please tell me what in that quote, specifically 3-cloud and quarters, that isn't soft zone? and Contradicts the post?

I've called plenty of Quarters and 3-cloud when I'm playing prevent defense my man......... So they didn't call the play "prevent" defense. It's not a play, it's philosophy.

Prevent, soft zone, whatever you want to call it; it traditionally fails in the NFL. It allows the Offense to gain short yards while hoping the D can tackle the ball carrier in bounds. It is a tried and true failure of a defense, especially if the D-line can’t create any pressure. It paid off for us this time but I like most everyone can’t stand this type of defense. Go with what got you there!

Don't ask me, notice it was a quote. I was quoting @TCUDan

Then you're wasting your time, ask the coach that diagnosed that instead of a guy that read it an hour ago.
Right, and I'm pretty adept at foosball... so I can tell when the defensive philosophy is playing prevent("the big play").

The perfect thread to drop this. This is what I’m Screaming!! (Not sure how to post this video link without it being Unavailable)

Excellent fact-finding on stuff that really matters. 🤔 :9:

:gosaints:

While sone people are upset about the offense, I choose to praise the defense.

It's far easier to work on improving the O vs the D as the season progresses

I enjoy watching this defense as much as I do offense, there are players at each level that can impact a game and the style of play is so recognizable that you have to give credit to the Saints Staff for finding players who fit this style of play.
