Saints Draft Re-do 2020 (1 Viewer)

I always point to this draft as proof that we do not select BPA. There is no way anyone will ever convince me, that all that talent in the 2nd rd, wasn’t better than the Ruiz pick. Not buying. Sell that nonsense to someone else.
Yea, I think that’s a thing said by people who aren’t involved in running a team.

The reality is OCCASIONALLY, there is a player that drops that you must pick that you don’t need. But the rest can more accurately be described as, the best player available in this grouping of players with similar grades.

Once you get to the mid first round, the grouping of players with similar grades get bigger and bigger and by the 2nd round, beat players available could be as many as 10 players.

I think people underestimate how much Payton blamed Larry Warford for the Vikings playoff loss. Ruiz was the consensus top IOL in the class and was available at pick 24.

The Baun and Trautman trade-ups certainly look questionable in hindsight.
Overall it was a weak Oline class, much like the year we took Penning. Just bc a player is rated the highest at their position, doesn’t mean that they are rated higher than another position. No way Ruiz was rated higher than the best RB in the nation. It’s all in part to the NFL’s devaluation of the RB position. We had a chance to have a super dominant backfield. To continue playing hindsight…..what could’ve been had we drafted Lamar, instead of Davenport.
Lamar, AK41, and Taylor. Who’s stopping that running attack? For the life of me, just pick BPA, regardless of position. It’s really not that hard

What you guys think? for discussion
How about we develop Baun and let him play....or Hendrickson??

Doesn’t Ireland answer to Loomis, if that’s the case Loomis should be the one gone. It won’t happen though
Of course, Ireland answers to ML , it may go through the HC but he still answers to the GM

I think and from reports that Hendrickson was misevaluated they just didn't think hed be that good. And Baun didn't fit the system, now maybe they should have adjusted the system to fit him though

Sure that sounds fun in the hindsight machine. But if the Saints drafted a running back in the first round (who wasn't even the 1st RB drafted) the same off-season that they made AK the highest paid RB in the league, we would all have been scratching our heads. At the time Lat Murray was playing pretty darn well.

There have been reports that they did not like Jordan Love at all that year. which seems to be a poor evaluation, especially at that point of Drew's career. At the time, the head coach was saying he already had Drew's successor in the building.

McCoy primarily played guard at aTm.

The 2019 Saints signed Nick Easton after Max Unger retired, with plans to play him at C. It’s possible they were planning to shop Armstead, who had missed six games and didn’t finish two others in both 2017 and 2018, and move Peat to LT as his rookie contract drew to a close. That would have been McCoy’s opening at LG, leaving an OL of Peat-McCoy-Easton-Warford-Ramczyk.

With Armstead remaining in the mix then playing 15/16 games, Peat never moved outside. Easton didn’t win the job, but then Warford was let go. Drafting Ruiz in 2020 to move McCoy to LG would have given Peat-Armstead-Ruiz-McCoy-Ramczyk as the plan, but Covid-19 messed that up so they rolled with McCoy at C and slotted Ruiz at RG.

If this all checks out, it looks like their plan was mainly marred by circumstance.
The Saints whiffed on my levels with the Ruiz pick. They didn’t accurately grade McCoy at center and then missed on Ruiz grade. If they get the McCoy grade correct then I don’t think that they even get the opportunity to whiff on Ruiz

No one in the NFL really saw Hendrickson rounding into the form he did. A few sites wondered why he was picked that high.

I think the other part of the problem with Baun is that he was playing alongside prime DD and I can see how that could be demoralizing. Now Baun is pretty much the unquestioned guy and he's playing with a lot more confidence.

I wouldn’t have scratched my head. We all saw what we did with AK41/MI. Taylor would have made a AK41/JT combo that would’ve blew that out of the water. Plus just bc JT wasn’t the first RB drafted, doesn’t mean that he wasn’t the best at that position. His production doubled Swift’s. In addition, Pat Mahomes was the better QB prospect in his draft class. Was he the first QB drafted that year? Nope, Trubisky was the 2nd overall pick.

4yrs 60 mil says the Bengals saw something in him that we did not. Baun didn't fit the prototype for an edge rusher in DA's scheme. He doesn't like smaller edge rushers

To be fair, every pundit thought that was a massive overpay. The Bengals saw something in Trey that nobody else did.

And DA's scheme favors guys like Cam Jordan. Only issue with that is that Cam is a Hall of Famer, a generational talent, and an absolute physical freak alongside being incredibly smart and amazing at diagnosing plays. Good luck replicating him because no matter how many firsts are spent trying, you can't match him. As a matter of fact, I can't recall any edge guys who have come close to Cam's combination of run stopping and getting to the passer. Even if Davenport had stayed healthy, he'd still be a shadow of what Cam is.

And I was in the "retain Baun as a pass rusher" camp. He flashed tremendous potential when they finally let him do it.

lol it's easy to do a draft...when you already know how the players panned out.
