Pass on Kenny Kitten Mittens.I would not be surprised if Moore try’s to poach Kenny Pickett from the Eagles. He knows his system already.
No time to throw the long ball. OL issues. KK had to scheme shorter, faster routes. No question about his arm talent. His longest pass completion was 41 yards to Moreau. The deep shot appeared to limited compared to when we had Carr out there
You could end up being right but the same size is too small to make any firm assessments at this point.I just don’t see it. I think his ceiling is Case Keenum-ish.
He certainly shows potential and that is what folks in the building like about him. Even more, they like the fact that he seemed poised and unflappable. Spencer played with a makeshift offensive line at times and receivers who weren’t very good. He never got down on them or himself. Rather, he went out and played as if he had top-notch talent around him, approaching every game with the belief they could win. That impressed people because it showed a sense of leadership and maturity on his part that he never embraced any notion of being at a disadvantage, even though he often was.He has NFL starter talent and absolutely no give up in him. These are the 2 things I know for sure about Spencer. The 2 questions that he needs to answer are…. Can he learn and play within an offense….? And given some blocking and talent, can he make good decisions and distribute the ball?
We have not been able to get the answer to those up to this point. Because he was a rookie playing with backups.
Another good point. There is no reason to crown Spencer at this point. But there are people in the building who’d like to move on from Carr and roll with Spencer. Carr’s contract complicates it and it’ll ultimately depend on what Moore decides. But Rattler definitely has a lot of fans on Airline. Does that mean they’ll stop looking to add to the room? No. They are continuing to scout the position as evidenced by some of the attention to Jaxson Dart this past week. That’ll continue. But their belief is that against some of their toughest competition all season, Spencer went out and showed tremendous promise while playing with backups. Sure, he didn’t win a game but he showed flashes. He has to get more consistent (though the lack of second half adjustments as teams switched up their approach to defending him often let him down) and he has to get stronger — something he’s focused on this off-season. There are little things. Footwork, speeding up his clock though you kind of saw vast improvement on that front from the earlier part of the season when he started versus the second time. But there are things he shows that you cannot teach. The arm strength, accuracy and ball placement, and overall moxie. Those are the reasons you try to develop him and even for Kellen will likely be the things that appeals though his concern is the same as many of ours—you haven’t seen enough to know if you got the one. But giving Spencer a chance to be the starter and to play with starting-caliber talent could start to answer the question. But the only way that happens is if they wipe their hands clean of Carr and let Rattler compete to be the starter.I like his potential a lot but would not be willing to name him "the guy" yet. What I like most about him was his poise under pressure. He wasn't always able to make the plays, but he kept his eyes downfield looking for targets even when he was on the run. He wasn't able to elevate the guys around him enough to win games as a rookie but I feel like he would have been more successful with a better supporting cast than he had. I also like how he improved more and more with every game. That is from looking more at the first halves of games and less when he was throwing riskier passes while trying to come from behind.
If I had my choice, he would be the penciled in starter for 2025 and draft a rookie in the 2nd or later to compete with him. More experience and good coaching would do a lot for him. If he ends up washing out, then QB would be the draft target in 2026.
Xavier Leggett begs to differHe has proven that time and again in college by being the only spark on offense for the Gamecocks, and when he had talent with the Sooners, he was a complement to the playmakers around him.
Rattler has proven (at least to my amateur eyes) the ability to lead an offense; those same intangibles he had in college translate to the pro game.
People want to cut DC, and I get he's a not a longterm answer. But as I understand it he would have to be a 6/1 cut and we would have to carry that $ until then. That means we have to be cap compliant by 3/13, So we would have to restructure a ton of our existing contracts to get there All of our aging players and players we may not have long team futures for forcing us to keep them longer than we would like. AND NOT sign any of our FA players like Adebo, JJ, K-Pass , Harris , pretty much none of them. That's what some inside posters have been saying. The big question is does Moore feel the same.
We have to rework Carr's contract pretty much no matter what to be able to do anything in FA, re-sign our guys or even sign the draft class. Can still make him a June 1st cut though, basically give him a lil money in a restructure and free up our cap then make him a June 1st cut. Yeah he gives us our best chance to win this year but is that even what we want if Moore has job security this year?
But it's not just about cutting DC and rolling with SR. It's about cutting DC and carrying his salary till 6/1 when we have to be cap-compliant by 3/13 and how that will affect the team for yrs to comeI think Rattler's ability makes a Carr divorce more plausible, similar to the Broncos Russell divorce and Nix marriage.
The Broncos bit the bullet and got an as-capable you-get-cheaper option in Nix,, and Rattler may make that move more plausible for the Saints.
