Saints expected to be very interested in former Packers/Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy [McCarthy will interview early next week] (150 Viewers)

Those are mostly valid criticisms of McCarthy. But I don't know that the what has he done lately is. He has been 12-5 in 3 of the last 4 years and does have one playoff win. You would like more, but random sheet happens in the playoffs all the time where the better team and even better coached team doesn't always win. Saints fans should know that well.

And, I've never been a huge McCarthy fan, but he has won wherever he goes and although his most recent playoff record isn't great, he has won in the playoffs too. Guys don't just forget how to coach at age 61.

And as I have said over and over, McCarthy is not really my top choice and maybe not my second choice for the job, but I do think he is still a good football coach and would be an overall good hire. I'm not sure he gets us where we want, but I think he's a guy that can build your organization back to being a consistent playoff team and leave you with a more attractive roster for the next head coach in 3 to 5 years. But, I also think it's possible he does end up having the kind of success we want.

Some of the young guys might have more upside, but they also have a huge downside and I think this organization is at a cross-roads where you turn it back around or you end up cellar dwellers again for many years. So, I think we have to get this hire right and McCarthy is the safest bet to get us back to the playoffs and build the roster back. Maybe he doesn't do it, but he still seems like the currently available coach with the best chance to do it.

But, a lot will depend on the front office getting it right on the draft picks.
Also they think that has kind of not been mentioned much is that McCarthy was pretty much handcuffed by Jones. From ast coaches to Jones pretty much ran the draft. McCarthy wanted Henry and Jones said no. Here it would be a total opposite. So while some are blaming MM for the playoff issues it could very well have been Jones's hand in the pie that is the real culprit

Was just thinking about the fact that since Loomis has been with the Saints, their head coach hires have been defense, offense and then defense. That's Haslett, Payton and then DA. Hopefully, Loomis sees that most of their long term success and stability came with an offensive head coach and they go offense again.

Hopefully fans will see that the most success the Saints had with a defensive head coach was when McCarthy was the OC.
Except that Haslett was Mueller hire , yes ML was with the team but had nothing to do with the hire

That's fair. Glenn would be far and away my top choice if he was an offensive coach. He has the leadership skills and playing experience to lead today's players. Unfortunately, he's defensive guy that is going to have to hit on OC hires over and over again. Still, I'd be perfectly happy with Glenn. But, I'd also be happy with McCarty for the reasons discussed over and over in this thread. And, I'd also be fine with Kinsbury and Brady for other reasons. But I do think they are both more risky than McCarthy or Glenn because neither has yet proven to be the kind of leader you need.

One thing just mentioned by Covington Saint that I think is very true, had we hired Glenn before McCarthy entered the fray, I would have wondered if it wasn't just Loomis going with someone he knew who he thought was safe, but if he picks Glenn over McCarty, or McCarthy over Glenn for that matter, it will have been a legitimate process. Doesn't mean he will get it right, but it's better than last time when DA was the clear choice and someone else would have had to blow them away for him not to get it.
I think with Mueller, Ziegler, Ireland,Harley Parentton . it will,be a legit process. ML is not in this alone he's got a lot of good help

Mostly Caleb Williams and they have added some young talent because they have a lot of draft picks from the guys they traded away. Plus, yes, Chicago is a nice city.

On the flip side, Williams is kind of a strange guy and Chicago is where football coaches go to fail. In fact I thought it was funny that Chicago fans thought it was impressive that they flew McCarty in on a private jet since they normally bring head coach candidates in with coach tickets on regular commercial flights.
Mrs. B has a plane , she'll send it to pick him up with dinner from Antione's on board

That's probably the reason I didn't say that Mickey Loomis hired Haslett, don't you think?

That's why I very specifically and very clearly said that since Loomis has been with the Saints.

Loomis has been in the room for that defense, offense and defense head coach hiring cycle. Loomis has been in the room to see what worked the best and for the longest, which is an offensive hire as head coach.

I hope Loomis recognizes that and hires an offensive head coach.

While ML was GM when Haslett was fired he had nothing to do with or was "In the room" when Haslet was hired . He was an administrator not football opps
