Article Saints interested in Brandon Staley and George Edwards for defensive coordinator (104 Viewers)

There’s nothing to feel good about. People just forget about what occurred when he was the Chargers HC. He was play calling, put that defense together and game planned for it. The defense was so terribly bad. All you have to do is watch the game before he got fired. The play calling was so terrible, the players completely quit on him in the 3rd quarter. Herbert was trying to move the offense, but the defense was awful. I remember watching it and feeling so embarrassed for Staley. Next day he was fired. If anyone at all thinks Staley is a good choice, all they have to do is watch the game the Raiders hung 63 pts on him. The Raiders. This has a very similair feel to hiring Dennis Allen as HC (except now we're going for DC). I'm a little confused how anyone could look at that Chargers defense, especially that game and say "Yes, that's the defense we need".

People are just excited that we may switch to a Fangio base 3-4 system, which is also exciting to me. But we’ve only seen 1 good defense from Staley that had Aaron Donald at DT and several good players littered across the field and that Rams defense was a 4-3 (enforced by McVay).

I'm half wondering if Staley would be viewed as a bridge DC. It's late to be looking for coordinators. So it is possible they're saying "Let's get a DC to help us change to the defense we want, and if he doesn't work out, we can find someone else when we have more time in the offseason". Entirely possible. But I hope thats the view.

It's also possible they're thinking they'll stay in a 4-3 and will enforce that on Staley as McVay did.
Steve Spagnuolo was pretty bad in his 1 year with us...
We set a record for the worst D in the NFL...

One year should not define a coach or a person...
And it is better that he was able to get that bad year out of the way without it being with the Saints...

Hopefully he learned from what his mistake/mistakes were & he is a better coach for it!

This comparison isn't making sense. Spags had several years of success with the Giants prior to being here in NOLA. Staley only ever had 1 good year as DC with the Rams followed by 3 bad years with the Chargers, the final being utterly disastrous. Their stories of success's and failures are polar opposites.

I don't understand what you're pointing out. You pretty much just highlighted everything from his 1 good year with the Rams and prior. And just for clarity, you quoted something a player said for his times with the Rams. Would you like me to link the Raiders scoring 66 pts on the Chargers defense that Staley was running and play calling for who utterly gave up and walked around the field because they believed their head coach who was play calling failed them? Spags may have failed here, but I don't recall his defensive players quitting mid game on him.

He didn't just coach in the NFL!
He has more than "1 good year."

He didn't do a good job as the HC of the Chargers... So What!!!

In college? pfft. Nick Saban was one of the best coaches in college history and sucked in the NFL. College success doesn't mean squat, especially after that abysmal coaching job he did with the Chargers. And its not just HC of the Chargers. He was also the play caller and helped coordinate the defense. And it was such a failure the players literally quit on him. That's what.

What Ever...

I think most of these things are based more on who people know Moore wants or people with prior relationships with Moore. Some of it is speculation but some of it is likely based on things people have heard regarding who Moore wants to work with and who he has talked to in the past.
I think you're correct....people are looking over Moore's history and trying to figure out who he has worked with, that could be available or promoted. Solid logic, although speculative of course.

I read an article recently that Moore would like to work with a DC that gives Moore's offense difficulties. I haven't followed Moore's career....at ALL. Didn't even know who he was until he popped up on the Saints radar. WHO fits that description? Is there a DC who has given Moore's offense a difficult time (on multiple occasions)? Considering Cowboys and Chargers tenures, I would guess that DC is most likely to come from the NFCE or the AFCW, based on 2x contests/year. Anyone have thoughts on a specific DC, or a specific scheme, that has consistently challenged Moore's offense to be productive?

I feel like Moore is telling us THAT is where he is looking?!

Todd Bowles has always given his teams a lot of trouble on offense. Not sure who in his tree is worth a look if any.

Bowles defense's have always been odd. One game they come out looking good and then not so much the next few. They seem to always be right around an average defense unable to break the cusp to make them a consistently good defense. Bowles has drawn quite a bit of criticism over the years on his defensive performance. It seems fans think, given the talent that the defense should be performing a bit better consistently. I don't watch the Bucs hardly every, so I really can't comment one way or another.
