Announcement Saints re-sign Jameis - 2 year deal [MERGED] (1 Viewer)

Based on the incentives, Winston will likely cost an average of 14.5/yr with 14M base and .5M incentives.

I could see him taking 70% of snaps and us making the playoffs earning that .5M. He gets another .5M per playoff win up to 2M. So maybe 15.5M/yr if he hits all of those two.

If he earns more than that, then his performance will have far outstripped the contract cost.
The $500K for making the Pro Bowl is reachable in the current format. One QB is usually bumped because they're in the Super Bowl and others bow out for various reasons. It seems like the 4th and 5th tier players make the Pro Bowl at various positions.

Thanks. Those incentives are mostly for things he‘s never done in his 7 year career. Never made the playoffs so certainly never won a playoff game. Never had a 65% completion rating. Never had a 93 passer rating over a full season. Only had one year of top 10 offense, but it was the year he threw the most interceptions of any QB in 30 years.

This is a one year prove it deal no matter how you frame it, not one that shows any confidence in him going forward. If he gets any of those incentives that’ll be a win for the team. His best chance at one is if the defense carries him to a playoff win.

It's a 2 year prove it deal. But I don't see why that's a bad thing. If he proves he is worth it he gets paid over $20 million and we get another cheap year before we either have to sign him to a big long term deal or let him go in free agency. If he doesn't "prove it" we have two years to find and develop another QB without being forced to draft one when the value isn't good or trade draft picks for a vet that may or may not be better than Winston. It's a win/win for the Saints. And it's a solid deal for Winston who can earn good money if he performs.

“In colts circles” doesn’t mean Nick Underhill. I believe he was probably an option if the matt Ryan trade didn’t go through before his bonus deadline of 3pm. And they probably wanted to get him up there to have their doctors look at his knee.
Denial ain't just a river in Egypt. You already said your "colts circle" was Colts fan message boards, so yeah, I'll take Underhill at face value over randos who were still hoping Luck would somehow come out of retirement.

And I actsully said this was a good contract for the team. However, this is not the contract that the Jameis cult were saying he’d get and even implied he got to some degree. The whole “why would he take another one year prove it deal” narrative is shot.
Give it a rest. You've made your dislike for Winston abundantly clear. There is no "Jameis cult". Your banter has become childish.

The guaranteed salary portion is this year only, with 5 years of prorated bonus. There is nothing guaranteed for next year unless he is on the roster past March 19th. One year $15.2 million with a team option for next year at an additional $12.8 million with $5.8 of that being guaranteed after March 19.

Yeah, we could cut him after this year, but my point is that if he doesn't play great but you still haven't found a better QB then you can keep him for 2 years at the Saints option. That's a great position for the Saints to be in because it gives them two years to find a better QB if Winston doesn't reach his potential. But, yes, if he somehow comes out and plays terrible this year, they have the option of moving on after this year. Like I said, it's a win/win for the Saints and a worst a one year pay raise for Winston with the opportunity to prove it and make fairly big money.

And there is no Jameis Cult. I have no idea how being rational about our QB situation is somehow cult like behaviour. Most of the people who like this deal with Winston also would have liked having Waston at QB more despite his obvious off field issues. So, it's not like people are OMG it has to be Winston or nobody because he's the greatest QB ever. Pretty much so everyone that likes this deal thinks he is a mid-level QB (probably in the range of #20 to #15 with the upside to become a top 10 QB if he commits and improves.) But, they also think that given the talents and draft pick compensation required for Jimmy G and Mayfield, and the fact that none of the QBs in this draft will likely be ready to start for a year or two, it makes sense to sing Winston to this deal.

If you want to tell me that you think Jimmy G and giving up picks is a better option, fine. I did agree, but I'm not going to accuse you of being in the Cult of Jimmy G just because you think he's the better option.

Is there some other point of view on Winston that I am missing?

He would have achieved the passer rating incentive had he not gotten hurt last year. His rating was 102.8 for the season. He had bad teams in Tampa. We would have made the playoffs with him as a starter for the season last year.

Keep digging, scratching and clawing at ways to slight him. But as much as you hate it, he is this teams starting quarterack.

NOt going to lie, I felt like it was when you factor in what could've been given up.

Us without Ceedy or Dav and our 1st rounder for the next 3 years IMO was worse than us w/ Jameis, Ceedy or Dav, and our next 3 1sts...but that's just me.

Same here, I was all for Watson in the beginning but as time wore on I felt it wasn't a good risk vs return deal. I'm very good with getting JW back and keeping all of our picks....and core players....

Brah, I clicked on your link and Twitter tweets popped up. I didn’t see anything from the “decent sized vocal contingent of these people on SSF that attempt to shout down any non believers” shouting down anyone. Then again I’m on an IPhone so maybe I’m not seeing something.

So, there's 4 of you, and then the rest of the SSF.

Are you sure that we're the ones in the cult?
