Announcement Saints re-sign Jameis - 2 year deal [MERGED] (1 Viewer)

Holy crap. The vitrol at Winston is pretty crazy. I mean he is not Drew, but who is. He is arguably better than Jimmy G and Baker, on a smaller deal, with no draft pick loss. I dont see anyone available who is better and the likelyhood of anyone in this draft being better over the next two seasons is slim to none.

Is he a top 5 QB, hell no!
Is he a top 10, probably not.
But he is likely top half of the league on a team friendly deal, and he is a damn far cry from the Billy Joe WTF years... which is probably similar to what we would be rolling with if we whiffed on him.

I mean people bring up Minshew, and I like him too, but he is under contract and who says Philly gives him up without a big overpay?

I take back everything I said about Jameis' contract. It's a great structure.

It's not even the $21 million guaranteed that was reported. It's a $14 mil signing bonus and $1.2 mil guaranteed for this season, that's it. Essentially, it can be a one year $15.2 million contract spread across two years if the team wants to walk away as long as he is moved before March 19th 2023. That's less guaranteed money than his backup.

It's such a relief that the team didn't tie themselves to him for very long. It also makes me think we'll be drafting a QB this year.

Maybe, but I suspect drafting a qb will more likely happen next year. I'm thinking OL or WR with the top pick this season.

As for Winston's contract, Loomis gave him a contract that protects the team if they decide to cut bait after this season, or Winston if he does really well and stays on has a chance to earn some nice incentives over the next 2 seasons.

I think this says a lot about Winston being confident enough in himself that he can make good on those incentives.

Agreed. IF we had resigned TA, then maaaybe we might’ve looked at drafting a QB. But w/o him, I think we need to go ahead n jus work on upgrading WR, OT, RB, TE.

Nothing about this in Colts circles. What was their alleged offer? You'd think if they wanted him bad enough they would've at least offered him 20 mil/yr. That's bottom of the barrel starting QB money. Surely he would've gone there had they offered him the 5 year 100mil deal Teddy got from Carolina. Matt Ryan is scheduled to make 25mil this year, 30mil next year, and cost them a 3rd round pick. It's interesting that the Jameis news didn't come out until after the Colts news about Matt Ryan.

Yep, that's a perfect deal for him... Gives us a nice window to draft a QB this year or next, and potentially trade for one or sign one as well next year... He is essentially making just over high end backup QB money... Like it.

Glad you see the light on this contract. Just remember he has incentives that could take the total value up to 44M. We can walk away after 1 year or keep him for cheap if he meets/exceeds expectations. I think we don’t move up in the 1st and take BPA. That could be OT, WR, or QB based on this contract.

Based on the incentives, Winston will likely cost an average of 14.5/yr with 14M base and .5M incentives.

I could see him taking 70% of snaps and us making the playoffs earning that .5M. He gets another .5M per playoff win up to 2M. So maybe 15.5M/yr if he hits all of those two.

If he earns more than that, then his performance will have far outstripped the contract cost.

Many of the same incentives in Hill contract

Yep. It looks like Winston got a bit more up front money but with incentives he would get paid like Hill would get paid if he were the starter. It seemed that the contract was always going to need to be able to be worth at least as much as Hill's starter clause in his contract. Which is a good deal for Winston and the Saints. If he performs Winston gets solid starting QB money just under Brady who is at $25 million AAV (which obviously means Brady is underpaid and taking way less money than he could get). On the other hand, even if the Saints have to pay out the $22 or so million it's because Winston is playing well and we likely have double digit wins and a shot to make noise in the playoffs. And if Winston doesn't perform and as a result we don't win he is being paid a reasonable price and we have the flexibility to move on.
