Haha yes...I am pretty sure it was indeed you actually. Fun times.
He did have that one 5 sacks season in Miami, so clearly he has SOMETHING in him, but my concerns then are the same as they are today - his slender frame and subpar speed/burst just aren't a winning combination at the NFL level.
It's amazing how well this skills test translates to that particular position, but when it comes to pass rushers, the 40-yard dash is one of the best indicators of success. Like every position, there are anomalies that succeed despite a bad 40-time, but more times than not, 6-6 270 pound pass rushers running 4.92 are going to struggle at the next level.
If that combo exists in a player, then I personally need to see insane college production, as in at least a pair of 16+ sacks seasons against superior competition, along with a vast array of unique pass rush moves to POTENTIALLY offset the measurable attribute downgrade, otherwise, it's a no for me, especially if you're talking about a potential first round pick. Nothing stuck out for me with Charlton with his production and what I would call "sack quality," as hardly any of them were the result of anything special shown on the play - many were coverage sacks, beating wildly inferior tackles after a fight that went too long for my liking, etc.
Easy for me to say in hindsight, I know, but I thought he got way over-drafted, even at 28.
You're not alone. It was easy to see that he was going to be a bust. But just like QB, DEs get over drafted early in the hopes (definitely not based on film) that they become good players.
