Hard Knocks off season with the Giants showed their draft room tonight. On day 2 they went in to it wanting Kool Aid or Lassiter. We picked 41, the Texans picked 42 and the Giants chose 47th. They talked about possibly trading up, but thought it would cost too much and wanted to keep their draft capital. They suspected they would have to give up their 4th to move up. We obviously took Kool Aid at 41, the Texans took Lassiter at 42. They pivoted to safety at 47 choosing Tyler Nubin. With pick 70 in round 3, they finally got their corner choosing Andru Phillips.

Shows how well the teams understand each other's likely needs and broadly how their boards might be stacked. I read something very similar about Ozzie Newsome in the draft room one year, pretty much calling who each team would pick throughout the first or second round.

Also supports why the team knows when it needs to trade up for who they want, as much as I'd love to retain picks, and how this lines up with the rest of the league view of prospects by and large.

Except Payton and his arrogance 😢

Most good teams choose best player available and don’t choose players out of desperation or position. We’ve been choosing need players recently.

It's funny. The GM tells a John Mara story about why they took Justin Tuck that plainly illustrates how to approach the draft. He said "well he was the highest player on the board!" That's it. End of story. Shows how teams over think the draft. Sometimes it's really that simple if you listen to the board and don't try to force the issue at a specific position.

This. And sometimes you see teams give a player a higher grade because they talk themselves into ignoring his flaws because he’s at a need position.

For Saints Ryan Ram is a good example of drafting bpa. It likely works out best for teams. Idk how Bo Nix will work out for Broncos but he was a need pick drafted way too high.

Perhaps not tipping that he wanted Mahomes to Andy Reid. That would have been a really good start.
I've never really bought into that story. There's a whole lot of hindsight and woulda, coulda, shoulda that people like to indulge in.

And also, as the above anecdotes have already demonstrated, the teams pretty much know who the others want anyway...

So you’re disputing that Payton said it?

I'm suspecting that it didn't mean all that much, if he did.

Based on his record, I'd say Andy Reid can keep his own counsel on QB prospects and, additional to that, the stories told in this thread demonstrate clearly that there aren't that many secrets among teams about who covets who.

But those who want to grind axes over perceived character flaws and egregious mistakes can continue to do so as they see fit.

I agree, hindsight and woulda coulda SP.
