The Saints preseason opener was defined by what we didn't see.
We didn't see the motions or play actions the Saints have shown in practice. The creative play design, the Taysom role: Hid all of it. So, there wasn't much out on the field in Arizona that suggested change, except for one thing we didn't see, which was perhaps the biggest indication that New Orleans is in a new era of offensive football: The offensive play caller.
Klint Kubiak wasn't on the field during the game, which is a major change for the Saints, since the guys holding the call sheets have typically been down there. Sean Payton, obviously, worked the sideline, and when Pete Carmichael took over as offensive coordinator, he did the same. Dennis Allen has called defensive plays, as defensive coordinator, worked from the sidelines. So did Rob Ryan.
Klint Kubiak decided to do something different. He set up shop in the coaches' booth in the press box and made his calls from there, and that's how he plans on doing things this season, which is different but also fine. ...
