Update Saints to interview Mike McCarthy in person during this week, Jan. 26-Feb. 1 [Underhill: McCarthy would have to be the current favorite] (56 Viewers)

Probably, but at the same point all the leverage he needs is to refuse to take the job until they meet his demands. They have already let it be know that the job is his if he wants it. The Jets really have no leverage. Especially when he is a package deal with a new GM.
Has that GM officially been signed, Newmark? Or is it not official yet?

Saban is a class by himself. In college.
The vast majority of college coaches from Wilkerson to Devine to Holtz to Saban to Meyer are failures. And usually epic failures.
you left out probably the biggest epic failure of all....Steve Spurrier.

But Dick Vermeil (UCLA), Bill Walsh (Stanford), Jimmy Johnson (Miami), and Jon Robinson (USC) might tell you something different. Even Barry Switzer (Oklahoma) may want to have some words. A Lombardi is a Lombardi, no matter how it was obtained, IMO.

12-5, 12-5, 12-5 and then one down year. Payton had three straight losing seasons mid-way through his term. They both have one Super Bowl ring and a history of laying eggs in the playoffs. I won't be disappointed with this guy, its hard to argue that he is not Payton's equal.

Out of the list you gave, Vermiel and Walsh already had significant NFL experience.
They were NFL guys taking a pit stop at college.
JJ is the one outlier in terms of a CFB coach turning pro.

And Brady was Allen’s QB coach for his two worst interception seasons of his career, excluding his rookie year. Perhaps a change in QB coach is what made the difference for Allen’s interceptions.

The idea that Brady took the Bills offense to a new level is just false since the Buffalo offense has been one of the best for several years now. DVOA ranks by year:

2020 - 4th (Daboll)
2021 - 9th (Daboll)
2022 - 2nd (Dorsey)
2023 - 3rd (Dorsey/Brady)
2024 - 2nd (Brady)

Brady went to Carolina and failed, just like Kellen Moore went to the Chargers and failed. Both coaches got another opportunity with a much better roster, and those rosters got their names added to the HC shortlist.
Where do you get DVOA now? FootballOutsiders was shut down.

Listen to Ben Johnson talk about the importance of an elite QB which is required for success in todays NFL.

This is a different version of the same debate I had with someone over SB winning coaches going elsewhere…

Most head coaches fail. To extrapolate out a certain segment of those failures and say they failed “because of X background” isn’t fair and ignores that fact.
