Update Saints will interview Mike McCarthy in person during this week, Jan. 20-Jan. 25 [Underhill: McCarthy would have to be the current favorite] (29 Viewers)

I really can’t wait for us to finally update our books so that the public cites can stop propagating this fear. It could use some work, but it’s not as dire as it is being made out to be.
It is much more dire than teams with significant room available rather than trying to fix past mistakes before being able to start a rebuild. The lack of cap room when compared to the rest of the NFL is a fact, not some make up propaganda.

He's a massive upgrade to Allen. I'll give him that.

Not a very exciting hire imo. He's at least competent which is a million times more than anything I can say for Dennis.

This is a very low floor, low ceiling hire imo.

Not sure a 61 year old is the right guy for a team that won't be good for 4-5 years.

This is a hire that will keep Mickey his job. They won't completely bottom out but they aren't going deep in the playoffs either.
Allen is low floor, low ceiling.
McCarthy at very worst is middle-high floor, middle-high ceiling. A massive upgrade wouldn’t have low floor, low ceiling.

McCarthy can be a division title winner, wildcard contender at worst which are the highest Allen was striving to be. He’s a proven deep playoff coach who can advance a round or more in most of his seasons as a HC.

Saints haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2020 season. McCarthy is a coach who can lead the Saints to the postseason again and see what happens from there.

Other candidates have promising backgrounds as coordinators but unknown at the HC level. I think the risk of them failing and underproducing is as high as their chances of coaching winning seasons.

Old roster
No cap room
Very meh QB room

Gonna take a lot of work. McCarthy is at least a real NFL HC. Not my choice. He's past his prime. But again, Dennis Allen is the worst HC in NFL history so anything's an upgrade.

We can be under the cap and clear $40m without cutting anyone, and can clear more by extending a guy or two.

The money is there if we want it.

Saints will make a good hire, have a good draft, and adjust the books, and these same people will be back on board like the Saints proved them wrong when it was just a matter of reconciling and adjusting the roster like every team does every off-season.

We are already $52 million over and need a little more for the draft class. If we restructure Carr, we are simply delaying the problem. There is a way to do it without pushing Carr into the next couple years, but it would take some reductions from players like Jordan, Hill and Mathieu along with some relatively minor cuts. We would need several restructures as well (other than Carr). That would be the best case scenario. And even then, we would have to hope for a very productive draft to even start the rebuild.

They should be able to get there, but it will take longer than most teams because of the corrections needed to bring down the deficit. Also will depend on whether they will rebuild or ride it out with Carr.

I think the misnomer is the Saints having this insurmountable deficit that will prevent them for cutting on the lights on the dome.

Let’s see what direction the team chooses to take and go from there.

Says the guy who always thinks our mid-round quarterback is the future. I give to you you're always optimistic.

The only concern I have about McCarthy is he's 61, how long is he gonna do this for? By the time the Saints are competitive, or out of the cap mess, he'll be 63, assuming everything the Saints brass does goes right. 2 year turnaround, assuming every move from now to then hits.
That’s not old! I know I’m 62 and don’t plan to stop working until after 70

Agreed. If they do not want to rebuild but stick with Carr, the cap deficit may be a little easier to manage this year, but take longer to erase. If they want to tear off the bandaid and rebuild, it will be a painful next year or two, but clear the deficit going forward.

If they're hiring McCarthy, they are more than likely going to continue to go after free agents. McCarthy is a guy you bring in to compete from day 1.

I do agree with this. I also truly doubt the team will ever go with the rip the bandaid off approach.

They want to do everything they can to compete every year. Just isn’t our style, especially if we are trying to attract a veteran coach like you said.
