I haven't enjoyed a Super Bowl this much since our own in the 2009 season. Mainly because, I was so sick and tired of the Chiefs getting ALL of the calls in high leverage moments, and all of the breaks. They reminded me of the 80's 49ers who were good enough on their own that they didn't need help from the officials but got it anyway. Remember when they were playing us and Jerry Rice spiked the ball at the 3-5 yard line, ran into the endzone with this hands up like he'd scored a TD, the ref looked at the ball exactly where he spiked it, looked at Rice and raised his hands as if it was a TD anyway? And since there was no instant replay, the call stood.

That's what it was like watching the Chiefs for 3 years. In many ways, they are the anti-Saints or Bizzaro Saints. Every time they had a 3rd or 4th down that was stopped, there'd magically be a DPI or defensive holding call extending the drive where they would invariably score (ESPECIALLY LATE IN THE GAME), and conversely, every time their opponent got a huge offensive gain, there'd miraculously be an offensive holding or offensive pass interference call. And add to that, that the Chiefs almost NEVER got called for offensive holding, it was frustrating.

And listening to the pundits STILL give Jalen Hurts back-handed compliments, while all he does is win and win while playing well. I have enjoyed it. The absolute obliteration was thoroughly enjoyable. I only wished they didn't allow the garbage-time stats making it look like Mahomes actually played a semi-decent game.

I know that I can't be the only one.

It wasn't THAT surprising to me that eventually the Chiefs would get blown out like that. They played close games all year and had a thing or two go their way in each game. You can say favorable calls, no doubt they benefited from questionable calls but its not like they were some juggernaut's that were blowing teams out.

The Eagles probably had the only defense in the league to do what they did though. Once Mahomes couldn't step up in the pocket, it was over.

Yep. Without the refs they could easily have had a losing record this year.

I feel sorry for Allen, he should have been playing in that game.

What I liked most about the game was the Eagles mentality the entire time. I'm hoping that some of that comes with Kellen Moore to New Orleans. Something that the Saints have sorely missed when Payton left, was the killer instinct the Eagles displayed. The Eagles seemingly knew that they couldn't win a close game against the Chiefs. Indeed the entire season had shown that if you leave the game close enough for the refs to help them, the refs will help them.

I don’t see the former Saints regime throwing a bomb up 27 points. Despite knowing a close game would favor the Chiefs, the Saints would've fully retreated and played prevent for 2.5 quarters. The Eagles did not let off the gas and that's why they won. Even with a dominating defense, they continued to play their game. Too many coaches focus on losing instead of winning. By that, I mean once they have the game in hand, they start thinking about playing not to lose instead of continuing to play to win. No feeling sorry for scoring points. No trying to run out the clock and play defense, they kept playing their game until even the referees couldn't doubt the outcome.

So not Schadenfreude as much as watching a coaching staff that knew what they had to do, what everyone knew that they had to do, execute decisively. I remember when that was the Saints. If Kellen Moore can do that again, it will be a welcome change to the disaster that was the last 3 years.

Correct. Teams are too scared against the Chiefs to where they play conservative and most of the times, they end up in close games. The Chiefs were highly flawed with a crap Oline, no run game, and a suspect passing game. The Eagles stood on business

I was LMBO when I saw the score was 34-0. Even moreso when I saw the white corner pick 6 was part of the scoring. And even more than that when Mr. Swift was getting clowned by CJ and mostly getting shut down. It was hilarious explaining to Chiefs fans that CJ was so frustrating that Tom Brady was smashing tablets on the sideline; annoying a media darling like Kelce is easy by comparison.

First of all, it’s Schattenfreude, which translates literally as shadow-joy, that is, joy in something dark like a shadow. I think it means joy in misfortune, like when the Falcons or Cowboys lose. 😄

In other threads I said I got excited about Moore when he called the long pass to Smith that put the dagger in. Talk about playing to win and not to lose! That’s what the Saints need and why we needed an offensive minded coach.

I really thought they should of lost all 3 Superbowl they had won. Crucial bonehead plays from their opponents allow them to stay in the game.

Where did you get the idea it’s Schattenfreude? The OP used the correct term.

We’re both wrong. It’s “Schadenfreude.” “Freude” means “joy.” “Schaden” can mean several things like “injury,” “damage,” or “harm.” Good thing I didn’t continue with my German major. I’ve forgotten more than I learned. :covri:

Ahhhh, yes. Some of us of a certain age also remember the 1989 home game vs. the 49ers. Rice lost control of the ball in the process of trying to spike it early, which was a bit out of character for him. And indeed, there WAS instant replay in 1989 (it began in the NFL in 1986), but back then there were no automatic replays of certain specific situations like today. As I remember it, it had to be initiated by the one instant replay official up in the booth. The 24-20 loss was part of a four-game losing skid early that season after winning the opener that featured all the things typical of the Mora era, mainly blown leads and bad luck in general.

Back to the present -- indeed it was good to have someone else win the Super Bowl this time. I'd grown tired of the Chiefs the same way many grew tired of watching Walsh's 49ers, Jimmy's Cowgirls, Belichick/Brady's Patriots....always a favorable call at the most curious times. Can we now include Hurts now in the conversation as to who's an elite, top-tier QB in this current era? Only other QB to get the best of the Chiefs since 2019 was Burrow, also an elite. (yes, they lost the pandemic Super Bowl to Brady, but that entire season deserves an asterisk anyway).

Eh, happens to the best of us.

Crucial bone-headed plays as well as poor, ineffective, and terrible late in-game coaching decisions along with questionable substitutes, injuries to key players like Kittle, Kinlaw, and IIRC, Fred Warner during Super Bowl 58 helped Mahomes and Reid pull out late, come-from-behind wins especially last year vs. 49ers in a near 2OT Super Bowl instant classic. In both of their SB losses to Chiefs, S.F. were winning going into the 4th quarter or had multiple opportunities to close and ice the game but didnt properly take advantage of good scoring opportunities or just turned it over. In essence, they just choked at the worst, inappropriate time.
