  • For 600,000 years during the tail end of the Miocene epoch, the Mediterranean was a dried-up salt plain cut off from the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Around 5.3 million years ago, the eastern and western Mediterranean basins were suddenly refilled during an event known as the Zanclean megaflood.
  • Now, a new study finds evidence of this flood in ridges along the Sicily Sill and in channels that likely formed from this sudden and powerful deluge.

The new planet, named HD 20794 d, has a mass six times that of Earth and orbits a star similar to our Sun, located just 20 light years away. Its orbit places it within the habitable zone of the system, meaning it is at the right distance from its star to sustain liquid water on its surface, a key ingredient for life as we know it.

Imagine trying to walk on it with gravity that strong...

A miles-long cluster of dolphins has been filmed leaping and gliding across Carmel Bay off the central coast of California, forming an unusual “super pod” of more than 1,500 of the marine creatures.

“They were on the horizon I feel like as far as I could see,” said Capt Evan Brodsky, with Monterey Bay Whale Watch, who captured drone footage of Friday’s huge gathering of Risso’s dolphins.

The sighting was rare: Risso’s dolphins typically travel in groups of only 10 to 30 animals, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.…..

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A newly discovered asteroid has a small chance of hitting Earth in 2032, NASA officials said Wednesday.

Scientists estimate the chances of an impact are just over 1%.

“We’re not worried at all, given the 99 percent chance that it won’t hit us,” said Paul Chodas, director of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies. “But it deserves our attention.”

The near-Earth asteroid was first detected last month by a telescope in Chile. It was designated 2024 YR4 and has an estimated size of between 40 and 100 meters (130 and 330 feet) in diameter.

Scientists are keeping a close eye on the space rock, which is currently hurtling away from Earth. As the asteroid's path around the Sun becomes better understood, Chodas and others said there's a good chance the risk to Earth could be reduced to zero.……..
