Scott Tolzien is the new QB Coach (7 Viewers)

Fair enough. Not directed at you specifically, but it feels like folks think because CKM is a "QB guru" that he can coach up QBs better than others can, so CKM will be able to polish a stone into a gem. And maybe that's partially true, but you can only polish what is already present. What I like about having a "QB guru" on staff (potentially THREE?!) is increased ability to RECOGNIZE winning traits in QB prospects.

I'm not as interested in all these retread QBs being named, as I tend to believe they're retreads for a reason. What I AM interested in is CKMs ability to discern QB traits he can work with and elevate. We need both skillsets (recognition and development), but development without recognition is likely to just be polishing a turd into a coprolite. And in my opinion, coprolite is no gemstone. JMO...

I think the emergence of guys like Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold when they got to places that had the right system for them makes it attractive to give these guys a chance.

Because they tend to be very cheap there is no downside to signing them and the upside is really high because you could end up with a good starting QB on a cheap deal for one year and then a relatively cheap deal for a few more years. It certainly seems more attractive IMO than spending $40 million on a mid-level starter that might not be better than one of the reclamation projects or if he is, isn't enough better for the cost to make sense.

Also I think the idea is that Moore can fix QBs and he has two other former NFL QBs to help him fix QBs as well as spot QBs that have the talent to succeed. So, I think it's both what you are talking about with spotting the proper traits and the ability to get more out of upper mid-level QBs like Dak and Hurts.

Edit: I'll add that there is also a QB development problem in the NFL overall. These guys are leaving college early so they don't get enough snaps there to develop and then they get to the NFL and are expected to be stars immediately or they are benched. So they don't get enough snaps for you to really know if they can develop. The same is even more true of mid round picks who don't even get to start the first year and then get no development while sitting behind a vet during the season because the starters get all the reps.

As a result sometimes first round and mid-round pick QBs fall through the cracks because they never get a chance to learn or develop.

Not sure what everyone sees in Lance? Can't speak for Tolzien, but Lance was at least 3rd on the depth chart behind Dak and Cooper Rush. I can't imagine a 3rd stringer on his 2nd team will be viewed by any coach as a gem waiting to be polished. Maybe, but I'm guessing more like a light bulb waiting to turn on. Seems like we'd be diluting efforts to coach up the guy we already have here, in the building? JMO...
Lance has a lot of the physical tools and abilities that you want in an NFL QB. He's 6' 4", 225lbs. He has a really strong arm, he's pretty accurate. Lots of things to like. The problem is that he makes bad decisions or doesn't see things very well and I'm not sure which it is or if it can be coached out of him. So far, nobody has really tried.

The 49ers had just been to the Super Bowl 2 years earlier with Garappolo, then he got injured in 2020 so they drafted Lance in 2021. But I don't think they ever really gave him any real coaching and just expected him to be the guy because they drafted him to be the guy. When he couldn't beat out Garappolo as a rookie, they shelved him for the year. When Purdy came around and could play, they ditched both of them.

So he gets to the Cowboys after not having really played any real football for a couple of years and having to learn a new system behind an entrenched starter and a backup that knew the system already, he only got reps with the worst players on the team.

That all started in 2021 before is 21st birthday. He's been in the league 4 years and turns 25 in May. What was he supposed to do under those circumstances?

Now don't take that as an endorsement at all. I have NO IDEA if he can turn the light on or not. He may be one of those guys that can't, but I'm not sure he's ever been given a legit chance to be developed into a productive player. Scott Tolzien on the other hand would know. Which is why I suggested it.

Good summation, I could see his career going the route of Geno Smith.

There should be no conversation on these guys until we give another year to Rattler to see what he’s got. End of story. Every other guy mentioned is a downgrade en side or low end ceiling. We need to go with what we have and see if it can work.

You have to be joking. Rattler at best will make the team as a third stringer. He won’t be number two next season. Moore is not DA.

Your only joking and fooling yourself if you think cooper rush or trey lance are guys that should come join this roster.

We drafted rattler and we need to see what he’s can do with starters, no I’m not joking, I see nfl arm talent, poise, and play making ability, now I need to see if we can bring him up to speed. Our priority, especially with the cap, wouldn’t be to bring in either of those guys and waste a bunch of money.

DA drafted Rattler and Haener and they both look like busts. I don’t care who they bring in but we need talent at the position, I hope an offensive head coach has better skills at choosing qb talent than DA did. I want the team to succeed, I wish Haener or Rattler could be the guy, but neither look the part.

Nah, sorry. The team has to revamp the roster including QB. I like Rattler, but there is no basis for him to be gifted the job. He has to earn it like anyone else. They can bring in any of those guys with very little investment and Rattler can take his shot.

There's a lot to like about Rattler to think that maybe he can be a starting QB. But there's also enough "not" there that you also want to look for someone better.

We have to upgrade the backup position. Can’t go into the season with either Haener or Rattler as number two. I hope we bring in someone to challenge Carr.

Elvis I have to tell you, this new profile photo is quite unsettling

Does Cooper Rush have starter talent? Could he push Carr for the starting job?
If he had starter talent the Cowboys wouldn't have gotten swept by the Eagles or lose at home to the Texans. Rush was underwhelming and cost me my fantasy playoffs(I had the most points in the championship round playing for third place)...against the Bucs!! He is certainly no Carr.

This is what desperation looks like.
