Question Should The Saints Sign A QB This Week? (1 Viewer)

CJ Beathard had 12 starts under Shanahan. They didn’t go well, but he is probably the most experienced QB in the system that is available. I don’t expect us to get him or anyone else unless the outlook for Carr’s return is looking bleak.

I would try to get a vet on the PS just to have another arm in the building

Update - I answered my own question. I forgot that Carr was injured.

Ummmm…. Why? I am assuming this is not a knee-jerk reaction based upon three losses. I still think it is too early in the season for that.

I have not seen the stats on Derek Carr. But last time I looked his ratings were right up there near the top.

I think Ridder is a very talented quarterback who has much potential.

I don’t have stats in front of me on Jake Hainer. However, he seems to be a better than average quarterback.

If we were to try to get a quarterback now, do you think that the quarterback would be better than the three we have now what would be the possibility of signing a Patrick Mahomes caliber quarterback?

We already have our Emergency 3rd QB. Taysom Hill when he returns.

In theory you may be correct, but the EQB3 designation not.

Hill is the most experienced QB and probably the most competent QB on the Saints roster other than Carr at this point in time.

First, starting Hill over either one of the two young guns takes away the "Swiss Army Knife" element that Hill brings to the table. He can't be both at the same time.

Secondly, Hill, if active, could be used in his all-around everything role to bring that element back to the offense, while being a 3rd option at QB if needed. This!

Hill won't be named the Emergency Third QB. That would mean he couldn't play at all unless both Haener and Rattler were injured. Out of the Equation!

I would start one of the young players over Hill regardless of his other uses. We know what Hill can do at QB and the other two QBs have more upside as passers so we need to see what they can do. And yes, the offense needs him doing things other than playing QB. But, while he wouldn't be designated the emergency QB for game day roster purposes he would de facto serve that role since if he's healthy, he's going to be active on game day and could play QB if the other two are hurt. x

Exactly.

With 2 games in 9 days there is no time to bring in a QB that would be more ready than Haener or Rattler.

Nobody said bring in a QB from the outside and expect him to start this Sunday over Haener or Rattler.

However, 9 days is plenty of time for a 12 year Veteran like Tannehill to come in and learn enough of the playbook to be able to play in the system if called upon.

We might as well see what we have in one or both of them, so we know if we need to keep looking for the successor to Carr.

I agree with this but the question in my OP was more related to the depth in the QB room while Carr is out and also not having a "camp arm" for the scout team.

No we have 4.

No?

Math exercise.

4 on roster

Minus

2 not known yet when available again - Carr and Hill

Equals

2 known available - Haener and Rattler

Current Solution To The Problem At Hand: Haener 9 Career NFL passes, 2 Completions for 17 yards, No Starts. Rattler Zero downs played yet in the NFL

No scout team QB to throw passes against Saints defense in practice. After the last 3 weeks performances, they need the work. Where will it come from?
