Spencer Rattler broke the Saints record for most passing yards by a rookie (1 Viewer)

I haven't seen anything from Rattler that gets me exicited. Maybe he can develop, who knows. But I don't get that cant miss vibe from him. He just doesn't seem to be THAT guy to me. Not a physical comparison, but I see a Mishew / Foles kind of career for him. Good enough to last a long time and make a lot of money but any trips to Canton will be on his own dime.

hard to determine when all your WRs probably couldn't be more than a #4 receiver on 31 other reams.. maybe MVS could land a #3 somewhere, maybe...

While I agree with you, if he puts in the work in the off-season to prepare mentally (reading defenses, & knowing hot/outlet routes), we may see a much improved QB. Maybe it was due to panic, but Rattler also needs to learn how to put TOUCH on his passes. A lot of his throws looked like 100mph fastballs, and if they weren’t exactly where they had to be it was an incompletion.

The difference between the Payton’s, Brees’s, & Brady’s; is they put in the work and hours studying tape on defenses and going through the motions. Brees would come in early to watch film and stay late working with the receivers. He also would throw the ball and then still go through his entire route progressions in practice. Thats the stuff that makes a champion. That’s what Rattler will have to do to be successful if he wants to be a starting QB.

i assume he is putting in the work, or he would not have gotten the start over Heaner that many times. Now no one can expect most players to be Brees, Brady, and Manning, those aren't just generational QBs, they are few in a lifetime QBs...

Not saying he needs to be them or will ever be like them, just have the drive and work ethic like them. Rattler has the physical tools, he needs the mental tools and that comes with a lot of work.

I honestly think he got the nod over Heaner because our O-line was on 3rd and 4th string guys and Rattler had more mobility than Heaner.

How many rookie QBs have spent significant time actually on the active roster for the Saints, let alone actually played.

In the years since the last rookie QBs took more than snaps in relief or in an emergency (starter and backup hurt), what changes were made to the game (we all know it's now a passing league).

I really don't think there's anything to see here...

His pocket presence was awful. None of the other stuff matters unless he can improve on that skill. Unfortunately, it's pretty much an innate skill. The 4 best I have ever seen are Montana, Brees, Brady and Mahomes. Conversely, Aaron Brooks was one of the worst. Again, unless he improves upon how to navigate the pocket, he will never be a starting QB in the NFL or at least a good starting NFL QB.

Rattler has a ways to go, but I feel like there was growth this season. He played a little better each game. I don't think he's ready yet to be a starter, but I think he can grow into that and beyond. I agree with the assessment that we need the next coaching staff to be able to develop QB, Rattler or otherwise.

and imagine spending the number 1 overall pick on Bryce Young and him throwing for 2400 yards in 14 games.. lol .
I don't expect him to ever be one of the greats, but he did have a more respectable finish after his benching. It was not far off what we're getting from a more expensive QB.

Young's last 10 games: 2104 yards, 15 TD, 6 INT
Carr's 10 games: 2145 yards, 15 TD, 6 INT

Young's 10 games converted to a 17-game season: 3,577 yards, 25 TD, 10 INT
Carr's 17 games in 2023: 3,878 yards, 25 TD, 10 INT

Rattler did a great job for a rookie, especially with what he had to work with. But considering how few rookie quarterbacks we have started over the last 50 years, this is a meaningless stat. Not to mention it is a very different game than Archie's era. In Archie's rookie year, Dallas beat Miami and the Super Bowl....Staubach had 1,800 passing yards for the season and Griese had almost 2,100. You can't compare QBs from then to now.

I saw enough from Rattler to look forward to seeing what he can do with an offseason. The arm talent and athleticism are there and I thought the more he played, the better he seemed to do getting the ball out. A lot of room for improvement, for sure, but I thought we started seeing some of that as he got experience and relative to the supporting cast he had.

Along with the physical tools, I was impressed with his composure and toughness.

Are we comparing Rattler to Brees or Manning?
I wouldnt compare him to those 2 BUT It would be nice to him play with talent as good as Antonio Gates, Ladanian Tomilson, Edgerinn James, Jeff Saturday and Marvin Harrison to get a good idea of his potential compare to what he was playing with.
