Spencer Rattler broke the Saints record for most passing yards by a rookie (8 Viewers)

IMO, Rattler seems to have the physical tools to be a starter in this league. Whether he has the mental aptitude, I don’t know.

That is why our next HC needs to be an offensive guy and bring in a QB coach that can develop his talents. The Saints have never developed a QB. Archie was a good, athletic QB for his time that could extend plays and run for yards. Drew was already an established starting QB who Peyton built an offense around. Other than those 2, no QB was drafted or came to the Saints and got better due to coaching and development.

At least early on, our new HC & OC will need to scheme around Spencer’s strengths and give him time to develop. The switching OC’s and schemes every year or two is not how you help out a QB.

Like others have said, Spencer was playing with 2nd, 3rd, & 4th string guys; basically a week 3 preseason offensive lineup. If we can improve our O-line and actually have some starting WR’s out there, I think he will look a lot better and more confident.

I don’t know if Spencer is our future QB or not, but as of right now he is young, talented, and has the ability to be coached up to be good. It will be up to the new coaching staff if they want to build Spencer up or if he doesn’t fit their scheme and plans.
Well broken down

Agreed on Rattler. It’s the same tape he showed all thru college. He is who is so far. All the physical tools. None of the mental tools. We shall see if he turns that corner.

To be fair, Peyton Manning struggled in his rookie year with passes going high and fast due to poor line play. Second season Saturday and rest of line stepped up and rest is history. Plus having Edge didn't hurt either. I say give the kid a chance. Put him through a camp with Drew or Manning and let him grow naturally. I think he plays with a confidence that I haven't seen in a while.

This again. Some of you didn’t watch the games he started, or you are reading his high school max preps page.
In his rookie year of 1989, Troy Aikman had a passer rating of 55.7, threw 1,749 yards with 9 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 11 games. Cowboys finished the season 1-15. Just sayin'...
EDIT: Also, that one game they won was during the four games he didn't play due to an injury.

With hardly any supporting cast, what were you expecting.
Which is exactly why I stated that I’d like to see him get a shot with a better supporting cast.

What I’ve judged him off of is what he’s been his whole time playing football. All the physical tools, none of the mental tools.

I didn’t judge him on his time with us only.

I think Rattler's worst problem is pocket awareness. He gets blind-sided and stripped far too much. He moves pretty well, but doesn't see the rush coming. If he can fix that, he has potential.

We had the unquestioned, supreme, all-time, undisputed confidence champion starting for us for a few years on and off in Winston.

See a wide receiver double covered 40 yards down field on the opposite side of the field he knows he can get that ball in there no problem at all.

50% of the time he did the other 50% well at least it was completed to someone.

Right after the touchdown goes the other way he was right back out there ready to throw it again.

Seriously, Rattler does play with a ton of sensible confidence. He will take some of the same risks but at better moments in the game. Winston was full go on every play like it was the last one to win the game. Rattler takes his shots but at the right moments in gametime, down and distance. He is more situationally aware so to speak.

I don’t believe he is “the” guy but he does deserve a chance to prove everyone wrong with an NFL grade roster on the field with him, what he had were backups and scrubs.

That said we should in no way be tied to him if someone else shows up in the draft at the right pick for us we should absolutely pull the trigger without hesitation. The more irons we have in the fire the better the odds one of them turns into a samurai sword.

Page right out of Loomis’ playbook. Compare a guy who was, and looked like, a 5th round pick to a 1st round pick, 3x Super Bowl champion and hall of famer, based on the absolute THINNEST of comparisons.

Dennis Allen is still trying to become Bill Belichick too. Thiiiiiis close.

Rattler Derangement Syndrome has been born.

Overstate much?

I wasn't saying Rattler is the next Aikman. All I'm saying is don't write off a rookie just because he struggled like a rookie. The Jayden Daniels of the world who come in and succeed immediately are extremely rare.

Also, don't write off someone because they were picked later in the draft. The so-called GOAT was picked in the 6th round. Bart Starr, who probably isn't the final answer, but is easily in the argument for best quarterback ever, was picked in the 17th round.

Rattler may be just another so-so QB who disappears after a couple of seasons, but he might be a quality starter. All I'm saying is we don't know yet. He wasn't a lost disaster even with the lack of talent surrounding him, so he should be given a shot to see what he can do with quality starters surrounding him.

That's the thing the mental aptitude. That's the difference between him and a QB who wins in clutch situations.

Are we comparing Rattler to Brees or Manning?
