Spencer Rattler broke the Saints record for most passing yards by a rookie (9 Viewers)

This again. Some of you didn’t watch the games he started, or you are reading his high school max preps page.
Rattler played with backups and played within himself and the offense; he threw interceptions, but what QB wouldn't when trying to make a play in an offense devoid of playmakers?

[Rattler] threw interceptions ...
Interceptions were one stat in which Rattler was OK -- 5 INTs in 228 attempts. That puts Rattler, in interception percentage, about the same as Jared Goff and Jordan Love, and considerably ahead of Baker Mayfield and Brock Purdy.

That said, Rattler has to improve on pretty much all the other QB stats. He also has to work on his fumbling (five lost in six starts). He's still a young player, and it's way too early to throw in the towel on his career.

And most of his ints were desperation throws to receivers who couldn't get separation at the ends of games. He was giving them a chance to make a play on the ball and it didn't work out.

I’m far from a Rattler fan, he’s not the answer imo….having said that I wouldn’t mind seeing him with a better supporting cast. It was pretty terrible. He can drive the tank just fine.

Rattler had more yards than Archie Manning, in less starts than Manning. Manning was the previous record holder.

Rattler - 1,317
Manning - 1,164
As crazy as it seems, in the past 54 years, there really haven’t been many rookie QBs take more than a handful of snaps outside of Rattler for the Saints.

All rookies have tons to improve on. That being said I take some of the negatives with a grain of salt with him. Guy has literally had no help no oline no receivers. Have to get him with healthy starting caliber crew around him to truly see what he can do and if he can be that guy.

It shows how much the Saints avoid starting rookie QB’s. They didn’t even take a chance on one rookie QB in the decades between Archie Manning and Drew Brees and the only reason Rattler got this much playing time is due to Derek Carr getting injured.

I am convinced that after Archie Manning they posted a sign in the front office that says “Never take a rookie QB high in the draft and don’t even ponder starting one at all” lol

IMO, Rattler seems to have the physical tools to be a starter in this league. Whether he has the mental aptitude, I don’t know.

That is why our next HC needs to be an offensive guy and bring in a QB coach that can develop his talents. The Saints have never developed a QB. Archie was a good, athletic QB for his time that could extend plays and run for yards. Drew was already an established starting QB who Peyton built an offense around. Other than those 2, no QB was drafted or came to the Saints and got better due to coaching and development.

At least early on, our new HC & OC will need to scheme around Spencer’s strengths and give him time to develop. The switching OC’s and schemes every year or two is not how you help out a QB.

Like others have said, Spencer was playing with 2nd, 3rd, & 4th string guys; basically a week 3 preseason offensive lineup. If we can improve our O-line and actually have some starting WR’s out there, I think he will look a lot better and more confident.

I don’t know if Spencer is our future QB or not, but as of right now he is young, talented, and has the ability to be coached up to be good. It will be up to the new coaching staff if they want to build Spencer up or if he doesn’t fit their scheme and plans.
