SportingNews.com on DRC

The #5 is DRC in that previous post. SO If you want to compare it to his cousin, this was AC's draft write-up:

Strengths: Possesses an outstanding combination of size and top-end speed. He is tall with long arms and very good leaping ability. Shows the ability to smother WR's in press coverage and redirect their routes. He is fluid for his size and is able to flip his hips when turning and running vertically. He shows outstanding ball skills and is a natural playmaker. Will challenge for the ball in traffic and shows strong hands. He has good size and strength in run support. A versatile athlete; he has spent time at WR and also flashes a lot of upside as a return specialist.

Weaknesses: Durability is the biggest concern following knee injury in July of 2005. He has been out of football for more than a year. Lacks ideal playing experience and he has never shown great technique. He has lots of room to improve in terms of anticipating routes, reading opposing QB's eyes in zone coverage and finding the ball when turned around.
===================

AC Sounds like he is stronger and faster than his cousin DRC. Maybe DRC isn't the elite physical specimen we thought? Just tall with a great last name.. Poor recovery speed? Weak upper body? This isn't exciting me... AC needed coaching and a chance to get healthy, it worked. Can you coach DRC's weaknesses or is he a flawed prospect?

Bulk? hit the weight room.
Turning hips? Maybe corrected with coaching.
Recovery Speed? You can't teach speed.
Didn't dominate weak competition? I dunno how true that part is but it scares me the most.

I'll pass at 10. Maybe if he falls or if we trade back some. Just wouldn't want to miss out on a guy who could help immediately at 10 (Possibly: Clady, Rivers, Mckelvin, Jenkins or if a DT falls..) Tough call...

EDIT: not dominating WR competition sounds bogus if what bsteele says is true. Maybe he can be coached up.. Ahhh I'm still wary of the guy, but I won't say it isn't tempting..

lol, I didn't make those stats up. They were taken from:

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/dominique-rodgers-cromartie?id=306.

-He benched 225 16 times, which is decent for a 6'2 182-lber. Adding bulk shouldn't be a problem. He also looked very fluid turning his hips at the combine and ran an official 4.33 40.

what about Aqib Talib???? I hear you guys sleeping on him....I'll rather him over all those corners. The kid is the truth

I agree...

I know a lot of people of SR.com are high on DRC, but quite frankly, I don't see what the fuss is all about. He sounds like an okay pick for the second or third rounds, but it seems like the Saints want to draft like the future is now, and this is not the type of player to draft at #10 if that's your mentality. I'd much rather have the more polished Leodis McKelvin.

I've heard that statement about him being a better "athlete" than "football player." Just being fast doesn't make you a #10 pick. Looks like Sporting News doesn't think he's worth a 1st day pick.

I would love for Dorsey or Ellis to be sitting there at #10. Oh well, that may be a prayer.

Keep in mind that these "expert" magazines and websites have to try to find something good or bad. If you read the weaknesses of AC, everything said is based off of him missing time due to injury. That is all they had to go by, so they fluffed the paragraph by trying to point everything that could be wrong with him as a result of the injury. They go down a list and try to make things fit the player based on a little bit of information. Take their analysis with a large grain of salt. It is their job to create -/+ for every player.

This guy comes from good stock. Antonio Cromartie anyone?

Who cares who his cousin is? It's just not a compelling argument from the pro side for me.

I have plenty of plump little cousins around....some who are navy seals, some who are nurses, some who are lawyers, one who's a drug addict...one's Jake Delhomme, and he's the only pro football player.

I'm not drafting Charles Grant's mom, or Willie Roaf's daughter. (I might draft Howie Long's son though)

Cousin, Shmousin. It just doen't matter that much.

Now, he's a good athlete...but I don't care about his family tree. :hihi:

Does anyone else think drafting a guy based on who his cousin is, is a little ridiculous?

I didn't know that was his cousin til he said so in the interview... but to answer your question... yes very rediculous... I guess the Cromartie fam must pump out CBs like the Colquitts pump out punters...

Not when the cousin happens to be Antonio Cromartie.

Deion Sanders, who was maybe the best DB ever, said that DRC was the real deal and even compared him to himself on the NFL Network. I'll take the words of a future hall of famer over some website.

I think DRC could be a good pick for a team who already has good starting corners, kinda like the Chargers with Antonio. But for us, unlike Payton thinks Usama Young is a starter, I think it is way too risky. I wouldn't mind making a gamble at a position where we know we have someone that is good enough to start next season.

DRC - Talib - Jenkins - Cason - Lee - McKelvin.

deion is personally training the kid, so he will help him eleiminate the flaws in his technique. there are all cons to every cb in the draft, but to me he has already shown that he can correct most of the cons that are reported about him. ie, he hasn't played against competition and that he doesn't hit. he proved both of those wrong at the senior bowl. yes, it is one game, but he had one of the best performances, and if you go back and look at the top performers from each senior bowl they are playmakers in the pros. close to 90% of the time.

But can we afford to have another first pick that won't see the field for at least a year?
