PERSONAL AND EARLY YEARS

Taysom Hill is the youngest of four children. He was named after Taysom Construction Company, formerly located in his hometown of Pocatello, Idaho. At Highland High School he lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track. As a Senior he was named All-Idaho Player of The Year, Idaho Gatorade High School Player of The Year, First Team All-State selection, and All-Region and All-Conference Player of The Year Accolades in Football. In Track he competed in the 200 Meters and the Long Jump. As a Sophomore in 2007 he recorded a personal best time of 22.5 seconds in the 200 Meters. As a Senior, he won the Long Jump event at the 2009 5A Regional Meet, with a mark of 6.85 Meters ( 22 feet, 5 11/16 inches). He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served as a missionary for the church in Sydney, Australia from 2009 until 2011. Originally committed to play for then Head Coach Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, after returning from his LDS church mission Taysom enrolled at BYU as a Freshman in 2012. During his College career at BYU, Taysom had 4 Season Ending Injuries, including a Knee Injury, a Fractured Leg, a Lisfranc Fracture, and a Hyper-Extended elbow. He was granted a medical redshirt and therefore was allowed to play 5 years of College Football. For his final season in 2016, Hill changed his jersey number from 4 to 7 to honor his late older brother, Dexter, who passed away in the spring of that year. He married his wife Emily in 2014 and they currently have two children.

PROFESSIONAL

Taysom Hill was signed by the Green Bay Packers as a 27 year old rookie undrafted free agent QB out of BYU in 2017. Hill was not invited to attend the NFL combine due to his age and oft injured college career. At his Pro Day at BYU Hill measured in at 6' 2" tall and weighed in at 230 pounds. He ran a 4.44 forty-yard dash, blistering for a man of his build. The Packers waived him on the final cut down and the New Orleans Saints claimed him off of waivers and added him to the practice squad. Hill was promoted to the active roster later that year on December 3rd, 2017. He only appeared in games that year on special teams. Hill has since played multiple positions on special teams as listed below. On offense he has played every position except offensive lineman. He has lined up as QB, FB, RB, TE, and WR. As a WR and as a TE he has lined up in the slot, out wide, in tight, and has been put in motion prior to the snap. He has been used as a blocker and not only is he willing but he has been effective doing so. He has been used as a Wildcat QB. He has started as a traditional QB as well, where he has been effective both as a threat to pass or run. Hill entered only his 7th year in the league in 2023 at the age of 33 years old. The Saints now list his weight at 221 pounds.

It has been discussed by many on this site with the majority concluding that Taysom Hill is NOT an NFL QB. Not one of starting caliber, not a 2nd string QB that you can win with long term should the starter get injured and be unavailable to play for an extended number of games, but only as a 3rd stringer, someone to fill in for spot duty for a limited amount of time. Just a gadget player. A role player.

I disagree with that so I'm in the minority of members here on this site. I don't believe that there are 32 starting QBs in the NFL today that are better than Hill and certainly not 64 (including 2nd stringers) that would give a team a better chance of winning. Career numbers including a passer rating of 90.5, a 64.8% completion rate, 8.0 yards per pass attempt, and a 78% winning rate as a starting QB, combined with a career rushing average of 5.5 yards per carry add up to winning football in the NFL.

I sometimes feel bad for Taysom. He "started" at a time where our whole offense was hurt, OLine, Tightends, Receivers. He had a foot injury and then a finger injury and still was okay. He is old now, but it would have been interesting if he had a chance to develop as a QB legitimately.

I also don't feel bad for him at all. The fact he got a chance is amazing in itself. The fact he made money and got a chance is incredible. There are so many people that are on a practice squad, or undrafted or otherwise who never get the chance. The fact the Saints and Sean Payton took the chance is already amazing.

Overall, I am glad the Saints grabbed Taysom. It has been interesting.

I cut out all the fluff because while Taysom Hill is a phenomenal player and was willing to play any position the coaches asked of him, you're comparing Hill to a Saints team that was horrible on offense for many decades. It doesn't take much to move into top 5 for almost any offensive stats. It's just the truth.

To me, Taysom Hill is our spark when we can't get the momentum on our side. With all the stats you provided, that's been his role and that's been the key to success in helping us win. Each player has their part, but Hill is not a starting QB. To put it into more perspective, Love got the backup QB job over Hill. If CSP never thought about using Hill the way he was used, he probably would have never made another team. There was zero interest in Hill other than CSP and the Saints.

Let's get into the QB stats a little deeper. While he has 10 TDs total, he also has 8 INTs and 17 fumbles (2 costly ones in the playoffs). That is a lot of turnovers and they happened more when he started games as a QB. As many criticize Winton over his turnovers, Hill should also be criticized for his turnovers.

Hill is still a great player, athlete, and person, but I don't see him as a full time starting QB.

If you're going to make a retrospective on his career, you have to accept all of it, including the turnovers. Those things don't diminish his accomplishments but paint a clearer picture of the player. He has been a fantastic addition to the team and his skillset makes him quite the weapon.

He ran a 4.44 forty yard dash, blistering for a man of his build. He has started as a traditional QB as well where he has been both a threat to pass or run.

Hill entered only his 7th year in the league in 2023 at the age of 33 years old. The Saints now list his weight at 221 pounds.

It has been discussed by many on this site with the majority concluding that Taysom Hill is NOT an NFL QB. Not one of starting caliber, not a 2nd string QB that you can win with long term should the starter get injured and be unavailable to play for an extended amount of games, but only as a 3rd stringer, someone to fill in for spot duty for a limited amount of time. Just a gadget player.

I disagree with that so I'm in the minority of members here on this site. I don't believe that there are 32 starting QBs in the NFL today that are better than Hill and certainly not 64 (including 2nd stringers) that would give a team a better chance of winning. Career numbers including a passer rating of 88.8, a 64.6% completion rate, 7.9 yards per pass attempt, and a 80% winning rate as a starting QB, combined with a career rushing average of 5.6 yards per carry add up to winning football in the NFL.
