Let's consider them head to head as they increasingly seem to be top options for Saints next season.
On Jameis (positives): Former first overall pick in the draft. Big QB who can make all the throws. Higher upside than Teddy--Potential to carry a team to a championship. Seemed to have corrected his turnover tendencies under Payton's coaching. Popular with teammates. Likes the organization.
On Teddy(positives): Known high-character leader. Adequate arm and decent mobility. Fairly accurate with the ball. Posted a 5-0 record as a starter for Saints. Solid game manager who pares well with a stout defense, talented offensive line and running game. Playoff experience. Very popular with teammates and coaches. Likes the organization. Bonus: Teddy Two-Gloves is an awesome nickname!
On Jameis (negatives): Coming off major injury. Limited sample size as a positive starter in league. Seemed to be restrained by coaching staff as starter last year/Passing offense was pretty anemic on his watch. Past history of being erratic on and off field (though not with Saints). Could be expensive to sign.
On Teddy (negatives) Has his own injury history/Slight of build. Not overwhelming arm talent. Has had two shots at being full time starter and hasn't kept the job with either franchise. Limited upside. A bit older. More of a game manager than a franchise QB.
So who do you like more? I'm going with Teddy, despite his limitations. I think he fits with this version of the Saints. Caveat is that I would be looking at drafting a potential franchise QB this year or next. I think Teddy is a leader and steady as a rock. Jameis to his credit seems to have matured a good deal in his time with Saints. But I'm still worried that, on some level, he's still kind of flaky. Jameis for sure has more upside talent-wise and you can argue that Saints should bet on that . But it is a bet and I think we've seen with a guy like Jimmy G and 49ers that a steady QB can get you close if the supporting cast is there.
I admit I'm a little biased. Teddy is one of my favorite Saints of the last 10 years and I'd love to see him back with the team. I liked how he played as a starter in relief of Brees and, bottom line, I just trust him more as a leader and a player for the Saints. Maybe that's unfair to Jameis, but that's my gut feeling.
