The 14th Anniversary Of The 2009 NFC Championship Game (1 Viewer)

One of the greatest games ever.

Even years later, KNOWING we won this game and the Super Bowl, I cannot watch it without high anxiety. It's crazy, with Minny driving with under 30 seconds looking to surely kick the game-winning FG, I KNOW Tracy Porter gets the pick to save the game and I still can't get rid of that pit in my stomach. It's crazy. Lol

I am typically not a game day drinker. I like to be clear-headed when I watch football because I enjoy the subtle nuances of the game that I feel alcohol can blur a bit.

However, for that game, I was just too darn nervous. I drank and drank while tailgating to try and blunt the nervousness but it was almost impossible with the energy around the Dome.

While we waited in line to get in, I could feel myself swaying a bit and realized I’d overdone it. Thankfully the line took a little time to move through and when I get to the front, they’d sent away a guy who was so hammered that he could barely move. I suddenly became worried that I’d be too drunk to enter. Turns out, I was probably about average for the crowd that day. 😆

I’ll never forget the feeling of sadness I felt when Chester Taylor ripped off that long run on the Vikings final drive to get them into FG range. It was so eerily quiet in the Dome.

I remember thinking “how could we lose this game? How am I going to ever feel confident about a Saints season again?”

I was dreading the walk to the car, the drive home.

It had been such a strange game. The Vikings had they not had so many unforced errors - would have absolutely mopped the floor with the Saints. The Saints played a relatively clean but underwhelming game as opposed the Vikings aggressiveness and dominance between the 20s.

When Porter picked off the pass, it felt like waking up from a nightmare.

The OT was bizarre. So many close plays, so many reviews, so little rhythm. The crowd was so anxious - and as much as I’m glad it worked out - I don’t think Pierre got the first.

When Hartley made the kick, it was one of my most favorite memories in the Dome. So glad I was there to witness it.

I enjoyed it from the raucous comfort of my seats in Section 645 👍⚜️

The game was basically a four-hour heart attack for everyone watching. It felt like an action adventure movie on another planet and we were all aboard either the Enterprise or Millennium Falcon, whichever movie franchise you prefer. If we lose, I thought, the ship crashes and the entire Dome just sinks into the mud in which it was built 😆

Actually, change that to Millennium Saint, for obvious reasons 😁

And who can forget the scene of random strangers hugging each other on the streets of New Orleans and elsewhere. There was no white…there was no black….the only thing that mattered was that we were all SAINTS FANS ⚜️

I remember after the game my mom and I went driving around town and everyone was honking it was awesome!
I had come into NOLA for the game and walking back from the Dome was like what I imagine V-E or V-J Day was like - everyone was honking, hugging, high-fiving...it was fantastic.

But my favorite local part is that all the local TV stations continue to do "man on the street" interviews for hours. "How to you feel about the Saints going to their first Super Bowl?" "Ahhhh, yeah, woo hoo" Nothing substantive just pure unadulterated joy.

Pierre DID make the first, damn near fumbled due to Greenway's hat on the ball. That game nearly killed me. Wife and son were asleep, 11 year old daughter, who never watches games, showed up next to me in the 4th quarter and stayed with me till the end. Held hands for Hartley's kick, then woke up the house!

I remember trying to calm all of the senior folks in my section down when the Vikings were driving at the end. I had just been certified in CPR but wasn’t sure I was ready for that kind of action. :covri:

The Saints were such a good football team back then, and proof-positive that you don’t have to be perfect to win it all. They made a bunch of mistakes through that 2009 season, had the 0-3 stretch to finish up, but turned back into monsters in the playoffs. Our offense put so much pressure on opposing teams and they were relentless. The years have flown by.
