The 14th Anniversary Of The 2009 NFC Championship Game (2 Viewers)

Not gonna lie, when the kick went through I cried, just like I did when my first son was born. That game was an emotional roller coaster.
What was so great about that kick is i knew it was going in right after he struck it. It just sounded so good off his foot. Incredible feeling i’ll never forget.

One of the greatest games ever.

In some respects, its a bit of a mini-miracle we won at all, just because Minnesota turned the ball over quite a few times and that last, painful, memorable one (for Vikings fans) where Favre scrambles, and instead of just running maybe 5-10 more yards for a 1st down, to set up an easier game-winning FG for Longwell, he decides to play the gunslinger one more time and throw the pass, across his body, where its intercepted by Tracy Porter. I think that particular NFCCG loss for Minnesota has to be more heartbreaking instead of Gary Anderson's infamous missed FG that wouldve iced it near the end of the 1998 NFCCG.

Even after Anderson's missed FG kick, at least they still had the lead and very nearly intercepted a Chris Chandler pass with a few minutes left. After Favre's bone-headed, costly interception, back then watching the game or seeing it for yourself in the Superdome, one got the sense that yeah, Vikings best chance to make it to another Super Bowl in 33 years just evaporated like steam fog coming off of Lake Pontachatrain Bridge after a heavy thunderstorm. I remember watching Favre's post-game press conference and he readily admitted when a reporter asked him if he regretted just not running for about 8-9 yards and falling down and then sending in Longwell for the GW-WINNING FG.

Vikings fans like to believe they got some measure of revenge 8 years later with the "Minneapolis Miracle", but casually ignore or over-looked the fact they got smashed by Philly, 41-7, a week later. It really was non-consequential, in the long-term and yeah, meaningless.

I remember as the Vikings were driving at the end of the 4th quarter throwing my Saints pullover in anger figuring we were screwed and going to lose. Then Favre thew back across the middle...........................
late in the play, against his body, across the middle, for an INT. Favre gonna Favre!

I think that NFCCG is so heartbreaking for Vikings fans because the Saints then went on to win the Super Bowl. The Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, nor any other season-end championship.

They made a bunch of mistakes through that 2009 season, had the 0-3 stretch to finish up, but turned back into monsters in the playoffs.
I don’t think we win the Super Bowl without losing those two games (since the third was a rest game). Like you mentioned, we were making mistakes and playing sloppy for a bit there. The team needed that kick in the butt imo.

It sounded like an explosion off his foot. I honestly thought it got blocked, it sounded like the collision of a kicked football directly into shoulder pads… but nobody in white was even kinda close to it.

I knew I could never afford those tickets at the time. I was slightly depressed because a lifelong Saints fan I knew what it meant. Then another lifelong Saints friend of mine called me and asked me if I wanted to go. I told him there was no way because my kids were little at the time and I couldn't justify the money. He said, "What if I pay for the tickets and you pay for the hotel and food?...we HAVE to go to this together!" I didn't even hesitate..."I'm in!!" I landed in New Orleans and he was waiting for me at the airport. There was already electricity in the air and it was so good to see him again. What a surreal time that week was. We spent the whole week in New Orleans taking it all in. We were out every night in the French Quarter. Making new friends....eating the amazing food....karaoke....getting up the next morning to bloody Marys...and then doing it all over again. We were having the times of our lives. I remember a day before the game a Vikings friend of mine texted me to taunt me. I said, "I've been in this city for a week now and I have felt the energy. There is NO way you guys are gonna win this one!" And then when Hartley's kick sailed through I had tears streaming. I turned to my friend and he was also bawling (we were not the only ones.) We hugged each other and just took it all in. Truly one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Winning this game was amazing.

Winning it against the biggest crybaby garbage fan base in the NFL makes it EVEN sweeter. 😃 We could not have picked a better group of losers to crush on our way to a championship.
