I think Davenport was the worst draft pick since Sedrick Ellis. Cost us 2 first round picks, Trey Hendrickson and had to use another 1st for Turner after it looked like it wasn't working out. Set our D line back years in terms of developing new talent.

Welp, you don't hit on all of them. And Dav had the ability just not the health, durability needed....

Also you may want to do a bit of research, it was never a Dav or Hendrickson choice....

Did the Saints make Davenport an offer?

I feel like it's always better to stay with the team that drafted you because they're invested in you. The Vikings could kick him to the curb after his 1 year deal expires.

Just proves that everything Sean Payton touched didn’t turn into gold when he was here. Anyway I’ve always believed it is a mistake to give two number ones for any player. The only time they probably should have done it they didn’t…..think Mahomes.
I definitely agree with you about Sean Payton on trading two 1st round picks for Davenport. Marcus wasn't even rated as a 1st round pick. I also agree about the getting Patrick Mahomes. Sean knew how good he was at Texas A&M and was interested in him. I would have traded the one of the 2018 1st round picks for Mahomes at No. 10 and still pick Lattimore at 11 and Ramczyk at 32.

There weren't any real risks in trading the 1st rounder in 2018. And the saints still had another 1st round pick in 2018 anyway. The Saints would have their future QB after Drew retired and a great backup QB.

The opportunity was there but Sean Payton made the wrong move by not taking chance at the right time which was in 2017.

For the 10th millionth time, they didn’t pick between the two. Trey was a free agent and the Saints couldn’t afford to match the offer the Bengals gave him

We made decisions on where to spend that money and we decided not to spend it on him.

The Davenport trade was a byproduct of trying to finally find a pass rusher opposite Cam Jordan to milk the last years of Drew Brees for a SuperBowl run. Our secondary was solid and DE was the most pressing position on the entire team. Davenport was rated as a first round pick, raw, grew late in his frame after going to a small school with ties to Louisiana. Davenport would not have been there late in the first when we picked but there were other players we could have gotten most notably Lamar Jackson who ESPN openly suggested we would take when the trade happened. The other obvious pick if we had only still needed a safety was Derwin James who was rated as a top ten pick. Davenport is injury prone and bombed out in his last year in New Orleans.

All of this occurred before Hendrickson had his best year (around 11 sacks) on a stacked Saints defense that beat the future Super Bowl champions in Tampa Bay twice in the regular season and lost to them in Brees' final game in the playoffs.

Hopefully Peyton Turner can step up this year and have us not repeat lost potential in a first round pick. I understand the front office for moving on from Davenport. I also understand why we drafted him given where the team was at the time.

I think that the moral of the story is - Davenport and Ellis sucked. Peyton Turner better turn it around or he will be added to this list of busts too
