The switch to a 3-4 defense (51 Viewers)

How is Bresee an ideal 5 tech? You want your 5 tech to be stout against the run and Bresee is our worst DL against the run, and one of the worst in the league.
Maybe he was asked to primarily focus on pass rush. Not like he had any coaching either from Grantham and Woods was notorious for having bad run defenses. I'm giving everyone a fresh start.

this is why i hate seeing all these mocks taking the DE's from Tennessee, Marshall and Georgia.
id rather shemar stewart at DE in a 3-4

A lot of people will focus on the linebackers and edge, but your front 3 drive the defense. If any of those 3 fail to do their job the whole defense crumbles.

Then you need a linebacker that excels in pass coverage. Even if your front 3 are doing their jobs well your edge has no chance to do his as the opposing offense will just pick on your WILL and MIKE over the middle for 5-7 yard passes. Then from there the defense crumbles as it has a domino effect.

Bresee is our biggest concern. Sheppard and Saunders can play DE. Not sure if Bresee can has he’s always gone blown off the line by run blocking. We’re also going to need to find a NT. We haven’t one. Commanders run a 4-3 but shift to resemble a 3-4 odd quit a bit and Ridgeway really struggled with it. DA ran more of a 4-3 under which was believed Ridgeway would find more success with.

Basically, we haven’t a single answer for an NT what so ever on the roster but there will be some options in free agency and the draft. More than likely, look for a free agency signing. Loomis is notorious for going into the draft without any needs.

Where could Foskey fit in a 3-4. He seemed to be in the doghouse for all of his time here. Is he a better fit for Staley than he was for DA?
He’s the only person on the entire roster that could play SOLB

You'll see some type of hybrid system to start. Breese and Cam (if he's on the team) will be DE's. Ridgeway has the size to play nose, he is probably the only one that fits the mold. Foskey and a slimmed down Granderson could be OLB's and stand up and rush. Foskey did a bit of that at ND. The first year will be a hodgepodge of trying to fit square pegs in round holes and seeing if something fits. I'd be very surprised if we field a competent defense in year one. We've had a "prototype" for out defense and that prototype is pretty much being fazed out with the switch to a 3-4. You'll probably see a lot of 4 man fronts the first year just to try to utilize players that are currently on the roster.

I had like a 6 page thread on this 2 weeks ago but I’ll give the cliff notes. We will run a 3-4 under 1 gap scheme.

1 tech - Saunders/ridgeway
3 tech - Bresee
5 tech - Cam
WOLB 9 tech - granderson
SOLB 6/7 tech - Foskey (lord save us)
SILB - DD/demarco or whatever his name is
WILB - Werner/gay if we resign

Granderson could and would at a much higher level than Foskey.

Foskey is horrible in space.
In the scheme the SOLB is usually a tad smaller across from the tight end and can occasionally drop into coverage or cover a tight end of RB in the flat once in a blue moon. Granderson will play weak side edge rusher just like josh sweat.

This is one of the reasons we will take a hard look at James Pearce at pick 9.

At the very least, he can be a backup OLB and ST guy. He's under contract on a rookie deal, we shouldn't be in a rush to get rid of him. All of our players are essentially getting to start with a clean slate.

I think with the depth of this years draft at NT/DT, I would ship all DTs not named Ridgeway and Bresee out with trades for draft capital to 4-3 teams.

Without signing anyone and just extending Young, we start with the front 7 below.

LOLB: Foskey/Grandy/Young
LDE: Cam
NT: Ridgeway
RDE: Bresee
ROLB: Young/Grandy/Foskey

ILB: DD
ILB: Werner

Then we upgrade from that.

I agree. I'm saying you can't ask Foskey to drop in coverage, cover a TE, or a RB in flat because of how awful he is in space.

Granderson is a much more fluid athlete.

This is a bottom 5 defense in the NFL.
