I got into a discussion at lunch with some friends about tipping at a buffet and what is customary. We are talking about where you get your own food and the server brings your drinks and checks on you. I was surprised how the range went from zero to twenty per cent.

So how much do you tip:

1. Good service for full service dinner

2. Adequate service for full service dinner

3. Poor service for full service dinner

4. Service at buffet restaurant

5. Room service waiter, tip included on menu and spot to add more on bill

6. Cleaning people at hotel one night stay

7. Cleaning people at hotel five night stay

8. Barber/hairdresser

9. Christmas tips for mailmen or anyone else

10. Graduation invitation from kid you know well (not really a tip but curious anyway)

11. Graduation invitation from kid you dont know as well

1. Good service for full service dinner

20-30%

2. Adequate service for full service dinner

18-20%

3. Poor service for full service dinner

10-18%

4. Service at buffet restaurant

10-15%

5. Room service waiter, tip included on menu and spot to add more on bill

$3-10

6. Cleaning people at hotel one night stay

$0-5

7. Cleaning people at hotel five night stay

$5-20

8. Barber/hairdresser

$6

9. Christmas tips for mailmen or anyone else

$0-50

10. Graduation invitation from kid you know well (not really a tip but curious anyway)

$0-100

11. Graduation invitation from kid you dont know as well

$0-50

That's a rough guideline. It's all subject to whim and level of intoxication.

Oh, and :cheer: for this thread. It should be fun, if history serves.

So how much do you tip:

1. Good service for full service dinner

25-30%

2. Adequate service for full service dinner

15%

3. Poor service for full service dinner

0-5%, depending on how poor the service is.

4. Service at buffet restaurant

I don't know, I don't eat at them.

5. Room service waiter, tip included on menu and spot to add more on bill

I never use room service.

6. Cleaning people at hotel one night stay

5 bucks a night.

7. Cleaning people at hotel five night stay

5 bucks a night. I left a fifty dollar tip once at a hotel in Santa Monica where I stayed a week and a half.

8. Barber/hairdresser

30%. She's a nice kid, and does a great job.

9. Christmas tips for mailmen or anyone else

20 bucks or so.

10. Graduation invitation from kid you know well (not really a tip but curious anyway)

Screw 'em. It's a dog eat dog world, and the sooner they learn that the better.

11. Graduation invitation from kid you dont know as well

See #10, multiply by 2

Indeed, it always amazes me what cheap people we have among us.

Oh, and to answer the survey -- I tip a dollar.

I'm pretty frugal...

1. Good service for full service dinner 20%

2. Adequate service for full service dinner 15%

3. Poor service for full service dinner $1 or $0

4. Service at buffet restaurant $1

5. Room service waiter, tip included on menu and spot to add more on bill 10%
6. Cleaning people at hotel one night stay $0

7. Cleaning people at hotel five night stay $5

8. Barber/hairdresser $5 on a $10 cut

9. Christmas tips for mailmen or anyone else $0

10. Graduation invitation from kid you know well (not really a tip but curious anyway) $50

11. Graduation invitation from kid you dont know as well $20 <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I'm not answering that whole list. I tip 20-25 percent most of the time, and I tip $2 at a buffet restaurant regardless of my bill. It's just always $2, and that comes pretty close to 20 percent a lot of the time. I tend to leave bigger tips for smaller bills for some reason also. And if the waiter flirts with me, he always gets a $10.

1. Good service for full service dinner. 18-25%. More if I applied a coupon to the tab.
2. Adequate service for full service dinner. 15-20%
3. Poor service for full service dinner. 0-10%, be happy that you even get your hourly wage you lazy ****!
4. Service at buffet restaurant 0-15%
5. Room service waiter, tip included on menu and spot to add more on bill Never use room service
6. Cleaning people at hotel one night stay 0%
7. Cleaning people at hotel five night stay 0%
8. Barber/hairdresser 40-50%
9. Christmas tips for mailmen or anyone else 0%, never heard of tipping a postal worker.
10. Graduation invitation from kid you know well (not really a tip but curious anyway) Never heard of tipping someone for this. Perhaps a personalized gift.
11. Graduation invitation from kid you dont know as well Aint going, but my tip would be "Look both ways when crossing the street."

Five dollar minimum no matter how bad the service. If I'm at a buffet then my party should have a combined tip of five dollars or more. If I have a problem tipping five dollars I just stay home. If I am at the bar buying drinks its a minimum dollar tip per trip. I never waste my time with percentages. Lets say I sit down to eat with friends and everyone pays for their own meal and my total comes up to twenty dollars. If you were bad and I disliked your service for some reason you get five dollars. If you were good with no complaints you will get between six and eight. If you were great and I loved your service you will get ten+.

My wife works at Picadilly's in Slidell. Even though it is a cafateria type restraunt the customers still run her back and forth getting refills, napkins and returning food not to their liking.

Remember most waitress' only make a little over 2 bucks a hour and many rely on their tips in order to make money.

I have to add also taht when we go out to eat, I let my wife decide the amount of tip. She grades hard also. But most of the time we tip 3 to 5 dollars.
