The tipping thread

I usually go to the local place that chargers $12.95. I typically leave a $5 tip.

I scanned through just a couple of pages of the thread. Have hair cuts been covered? What do you guys normally tip? Curious on women too but I guess the price of the cut has to be factored in.

I think it is the same - 15 to 20 percent depending on satisfaction and relationship. Also, add a buck or two for the hair wash person if it's a separate person and if they do that thing where they massage your head and you want to go to sleep.

I tip 20 percent and add two bucks to the hair wash lady.

this is a spot I almost go in the opposite direction. I have paid up to 30 for a cut but I also like a clean look so I sometimes go once every 3 weeks or so and there is nothing to do but trim. I have had an older barber cut it for 12 and it looked just as good. They set their own price so I don't feel I have to go as closely to a percentage basis. In fact I would tip the $12 dollar cut 6 or 7 so that it brings them more inline with what others a charging since the work is comparable.

The cost for women's hair cuts is through the roof. I actually started going to the Aveda school for my hair cuts because all they do is clip an inch or so off the ends of my long straight hair. It's $18 for a shampoo, cut and blowdry with a master student (one that is on the verge of graduation). Which begs the question....wasn't the purpose of the tips due to the fact that they weren't paid much? It *appears* that hair dressers are not just scraping by anymore. I know a couple of them and they make more than I do as a senior analyst. But I don't work in the field so I couldn't say for certain.

I had a barber downtown in NYC a while back charge $35 for a haircut and when I handed him a $50 and said to keep the change he handed me the change and said "we charge $35 for a 10 minute haircut. Tipping isn't necessary."

Same thing at my $12 place at home would look at me funny if I didn't tip.

The tip. I can't remember how much it costs.

Now that I've made the rare trip to get my hair cut the cost was $25 which includes wash and head massage, styling product on it and good conversation. Worth the $20 tip cause we cool like that with each other.

picked up some gruyere cheese at the hotsy totsy grocery this morning...... $11.49. handed the gal $15 cash and she hit me with--

"would you like your change? "

took me 3 seconds to dislodge my tongue and say "yes, yes i would. and the ones as well."

is there no end to this?

(side note-----kinda cool to resurrect a thread i killed)
