i'm trying to rationalize it but the more i think about it, it boils down to greg williams being the issue.

I'm so angry with man boob man right now.

Greg Williams...I want him gone.

yeah i'm leaning towards that way now. or it could be that i'm just starting to lean, thnx johnnie!

people say we're nasty, i say we're not nasty enough. i was expecting 27 and 41 to match the ruthlessness of frisco especially in the 1st half *sigh* little have i forgotten that our D relies on cheap gimmicks that are worthless. nobody truly has the cojones to lay some one out like they did us. therefore we perish. brutality is the only way but then again i speak of madness in this era of *****ness1!

now that, that has been said i shall dwell in my obscurity for the time being.

I think GW has to go. We all loved his quote about catching colds, but recognizing our inability to get turnovers, he still runs the same plays. Stubborn beyond belief. If we had run prevent we probably win.

GW isn't the man on the field making (or not) plays.

We could have the best DC in the universe and if the guys on the field are not making plays...

I don't know what the problem is. Scheme, players, fluctuation in space/time. Probably a bit of everything. Can't put everything on Drew's shoulders like that. Upgrades at LT and RT are needed pretty badly, I think.

I was fine with the defensive game he called until the last 5 minutes. On that last drive there was no reason for him to be blitzing when they were backed up. He gave the game away at the end by making terrible decisions and putting players in positions which made it very difficult to succeed. We do need to upgrade the talent of defense, but given what we had, there is no excuse for leaving a safety man to man with a giant TE who runs like a 4.3

single coverage on davis is inexcusable.

I'm sure Williams is a fine defensive coach, but the calls in the last 5 minutes were terrible. Vernon Davis is their best weapon, really their only weapon, and you have to double him. No safety, no matter how good can single cover him.

The problem is that Williams had no counter punch, by design he does not have the DE's you need to get pressure with 4 so he can't/won't play coverage and rush only 4. When he does, a QB has all day long to throw and can find openings in the zone.

But, regardless of why it seems fairly clear that the defense has regressed since 2009. That may be because the scheme, because we don't have the players to run it or because other teams have figured it out. But, regardless of the reason, it may be time for a change.

LT and RT, while they could be upgraded, are the least of our worries. SF got pressure up the middle against our All-Pro Guards. I'm not certain the reason, other than that SF is very talented in the middle, but part of it is that without Pierre Thomas on the field we don't have a really good pass blocking RB other than Ingram who was injured. Ivory has major issues in pass protection and Sproles is just to small to be much more than a speed bumb.

i've been reading a lot about people petitioning for a switch to 3/4 on D. don't we already run a hybrid of about 1/4 34 stances? at first i was thinking f that, it's marginal at best, but when i look at how successful teams are with it, it's definitely a possibility to consider. i wouldn't be opposed to it if we had the right people, but i don't see it being successful when we are already so limited on linebackers. plus, i'm pretty sure that was why we got vilma because of the jets switch.

i've never really been a big fan of the 34 unless it's implemented correctly. the 49ers run it damn near perfect. they have the right personnel and it makes their weak secondary more efficient. look at the turn around by the texans in only one season. from worst to first.

for as much as i love the 43, i'd be open to bringing in the right coach to pull it off.

excuse my rambling. i'm still ****** off.

I'm not sold that a 3-4 or a 4-3 is inherently better, but I will say that I think it is a lot easier to find LBs and DE/DT's to play in a 3-4 than a 4-3. For whatever reason, there do not seem to be a lot of 4-3 LB's that can play the middle or strong side coming out of college, but there seem to be a lot of those tweener guys who can play OLB in the 3-4. Also, there seem to be more guys that can play MLB in the 3-4 than guys who have the combination of size and speed to play MLB in the 3-4. And, although Vilma was not happy in a 3-4, he is older and slower now and we could still use him as a nickle and dime LB while letting him rest or have less field to cover in the based 3-4.

In the end, I think it's time to more or less start over in the front 7 and it would be faster to re-build to a 3-4 through the draft rather than to try to build a 4-3. There just seems to be more 3-4 talent coming out of college. Look at what the Texans did in one draft.
