Look at how undisciplined this team has been since coach Payton left. We need a coach with fire, who will demand respect, an alpha, and one who studies every detail of the game, along with their x and o’s knowledge. That screams Jon Gruden. Everyone else mentioned has a personality of Dennis Allen and will just be Yes Men to Loomis. Let Gruden run it for a couple years until we get out of this cap situation and make the most out of what we have now and also help demand excellence from the incoming rookie classes and lay a foundation for whatever coach may come in afterwards. DA has destroyed that and we need it back badly. It’s crazy how the broncos looked from year 1 to year 2 and you can see the players play hard and respond well to SP. we need to that right now in the worst way on this current team.

Gruden is better that DA for sure, but bringing in Gruden doesn’t mean we will get back what Payton brought to the table. Payton is on another level and the only coaches in his league right now are Andy Reid and Mike Tomlin IMO. We may never have a coach as great as Payton ever again.

I like Gruden. I asked the question yesterday, in another thread, what was his nfl banishment all about…. I wasn’t paying too much attention to it when it was happening. The more I research it, the more I find flaws like the bounty gate evidence. I am not a fan of cancel culture, especially based to specific interpretations of what was said and in what context. In my opinion, there is Lots of grey area with what he said racially. Now, with that said, I think that any team that hires Gruden will go on the NFL crap list and we all know how that feels. No matter what you do, there will be a moment where the NFL powers at hand will remind you what it is like to defy them.

We will never be a good team again as long as ML is treating the head coach position like it’s just an upper team management position. It’s unheard of that a GM decides who he wants as position coaches first, then leverages in a head coach. (By leverage I mean the GM tells the coach “ you can have the job If you do this or that”) This is why DA seemed weak, like a yes man and without ability to enforce accountability. Part of being the head coach is having full control. Anyway, I’m hoping that’s not what’s going on behind the scenes.

Underhill has already squashed this rumor. The assistants have already been given permission to seek other employment, and no incoming coach would have a mandate to keep anyone.

I agree, now that it looks like everything is lining up for Vrabel to go to NE, Gruden is who we need for all the reasons you mentioned and more. Gruden loves football and the NFL, there's not doubting his passion about the sport. Many people disappear after being canceled, yet Gruden remade himself after some time away. He's worked as a consultant for the Saints. Rumors are the we almost hired him last year. He wants back in the NFL. That's what we need. It's obvious he wants to rewrite his legacy. If we hire him, it could be one of those lifetime hires where he stays until he retires. He will want to create/expand his coaching tree so he'll bring in guys to renew and revitalize his offensive system, he'll also bring in a DC to give the defense an identity.

We should not be interested in Gruden.

(1) We need somebody hungry - like Gruden was in 2002 and like Payton was in 2006. Gruden has already made it and cashed in. He is fat and happy.

(2) We need somebody Goodell et al actually like. Gruden is persona non grata to them. We'd just get more no-calls in big games.

(3) The game evolves, we need new blood.

You raise a couple of good points to an extent.

1.) yes this team needs discipline and Jon would demand that
2.) We need someone who will be willing to coach us, until some of these bad contracts fall off of the books.

Jon is already a Super Bowl winning HC, so he has already tasted that. No one can take that away. Plus, with his lawsuit against the NFL, our team may be the only team, who is willing to give him a shot. With that being said, maybe he would be willing to coach us through some bad seasons, until our cap situation is correct, and then he can go off into retirement. Sorta like an agreement where “you scratch our back and we’ll scratch yours” type thing.
Which is:
You get another HC job and we get a lame duck HC (in essence), until we are ready to make some serious moves at HC and QB.
It would be a tall order to ask someone, but like I said, Jon has nothing left to prove, and he would stick it to the NFL by getting a coaching spot. Not the best terms, but it’s something.

Frankly, I’d still want another HC, where we identify the guy, and give him at least a year grace period.

Where are we getting this "yes man" narrative from?
