Tiktok stuff (28 Viewers)

The whole TikTok thing is pretty crazy.

- In super cringey hearings, many in the US Congress seemed downright 20th century about the whole thing, including a very strange exchange between TikTok's Singaporean CEO and Sen. Tom Cotton about whether the CEO was or ever has been a member of the Chinese communist party (he has not and Singapore is not part of China).

- Based on the supposed national security threat, Congress passes law, signed by the president that TikTok must be removed from US app providers and go offline by Sunday January 19, 2025.

- The law was challenged in court and the SCOTUS (today) denied the challenge, leaving the law in-place.

- The Biden White House (on what would be it's last full day) said it would not take any action relative the enforcement of the law, leaving it for the Trump administration.

- Trump has invited the TikTok CEO to sit in the VIP section at the inauguration on January 20, the day after the ban goes into place.

- Many US TikTok users have migrated to Red Note, a similar app that is actually Chinese - and are finding that (a) the Chinese users there are really nice and (b) some elements of life in China seem really cool if not impressive.

Im one of them, It really is amazing how nice everyone has been. Tons of people teaching Mandarin and every interaction Ive seen has been nothing short of pleasant.

I'm getting a huge laugh off the pettiness people are showing to the US Gov. It was stupid to implement the ban without giving SPECIFIC details on the risks TikTok poses.

I don't think you'll find any of the douchbaggery from US based social media on RedNote. The Chinese government is enforcing civility over there. Frankly, from a cultural perspective, this is a huge boon for China. I'm personally not going to join RedNote but I respect the move others have made. Besides, I'm putting my spare time into studying Japanese. I've got no time for Mandarin.

At my kids' school, they learn Mandarin (they just call it 'Chinese') one semester each year from first through fourth grade - the teacher is really good.

After that, they can choose their own foreign language but Chinese is offered all the way through 12th grade. My kids (6th and 4th) don't know much, but the fact they're exposed to it as a really good thing, IMO.

My daughter told me that many Chinese kids are getting US folk to help them with their English homework on RedNote- she is one of them lol.

That's cool. There are a lot of languages I would like to learn.
