Question To the draft BPA crowd, was Bresee BPA? (2 Viewers)

I don't know if the Saints' front office operates on choosing the BPA for 1st Round picks. Not saying that is wrong or right. GM seems to pick for BP who fits a need. Very rarely does GM Loomis pick a player in the 1st Round who is also not a need. There are exceptions: Peyton Turner and Cesar Ruiz come to mind. But, overall, the Saints seem to pick a player who is needed.

I think the Saints will get a very good player who can start in the 2nd round, i.e. TE, G, or DB.

I think we have enough T.E.'s to get us through until next year. We really need to find Cam's replacement and Andrus' replacement sooner rather than later.

Or did the team take the best DT they felt was on the board, as the position is/was so thin?

I don’t feel he was BPA but I certainly understand the pick. Welcome to New Orleans Mr. Bresee, here’s to hoping you have a great career.
Either Bresee or Nolan Smith (terrible scheme fit).

Only thing about Bresee is his injury history.

Having lived in Clemson, Bresee is a great football player.

Played a lot of DT, but did slide to DE occasionally. His “injury history” baffles me as he tore his ACL 2 years ago and had an illness / family death this past year.

When he’s on the field and I’m the correct mindset he is a force.

Listen to the coach and GM interviews. They clearly lay out the process.

Every player is graded and put in order. That is their board, that is where "best player available" comes from. Not random website big board. The Saints board. Based on players that fit their profiles, testing, etc.

When it gets to their pick there may be players with very similar grades. If one of them is a position of bigger need, of course you take that player and don't split hairs on an insignificant grade difference.

The positional need does not affect their grade though. They don't want to reach for positions. If there was a clearly better player at any position they wouldn't have drafted Bresee.

Saints war room does not publish their rankings or even share glimpses, but the consensus put together from multiple sites and all their inherent weaknesses says no to BPA. Banks the S out of Alabama and a position of need was/is available.

He WAS the best DT available.

I will say that Jalen Carter dropped far enough to mortgage our draft capital to try and move up, but Igglets with our earned draft spot did just that. All is well if Penning turns out to be more than just a tough guy. BPA available is only pertinent to talented/winning teams already.

I invite you to go down that board and see how accurate it is to the actual NFL draft. They have top 16 guys falling out of the first round. Even at high-value positions. Is that what you should use to determine BPA?

The Saints laid out their process and said they stuck to the process. He was 1 of the two best guys when Cincy was picking. They got lucky and it all fell out right.

He was he BPA at a position the team believed they desperately needed.... I think we reached a bit for need with him. I think Mayer, Sanders, Branch, and Porter Jr were all more in the true BPA conversation than Bresee...

I don’t know if he was bpa, but it certainly seems like sitting at #29 and drafting him was not the Saints’ plan A or B or perhaps even C. I’m sure they had their sights on other players and were trying to trade up for them.

I’m just going off most scouting reports and the eye test. I appreciate the snide comment tho, it’s par for the course. Just trying to discuss the team’s move, on a website about the team. 😊

Why are we here and why is the website here if not to discuss the team? Why support the site?

Exactly. Some people don't have the ability to listen to a differing opinion without acting like a 4 year old.

I agree. So a guy like Mayer who is a do-it-all complete TE is essentially Moreau, also a do-it-all complete TE. The guys who bring something different are Washington and Kuntz with their size. Washington is ahead with is blocking and Kuntz is a unicorn mismatch receiving threat. I can see them drafting one of them over Mayer, LaPorta or Kraft.

I'd love getting Kuntz in the later rounds

No worries. I don’t take it personally. Just always curious why folks are so condescending all the time now? I’m just trying to talk about the team I’ve loved for all my life. Been here since 97, it used to be the best place to talk about our team, idk anymore. Genuinely don’t understand why the board is here if not supposed to talk about the team. We won’t always agree, I only hope we can try and be civil in our disagreements.

Anyhow, as stated in OP, I don’t think he was BPA there but I do think he may have been BPA at position of most need. That’s why I was curious what others felt in that regard.

Who Dat. 😊
Being negative attracts more attention. Also, given the failure rate of NFL draftees, it's easy to say "this guy is a bad pick" and ultimately be correct. The fact is that the Saints coaching staff and front office know a million times more about these players than we ever will. As fans, we should withhold judgment for at least 3 years.

Wasn’t high on the pic last night, but after a little more research and YouTube videos, I think he was the best player available as far as need and fit. Then, compound that with the fact we didn’t have to trade up and still now have two very good pics (R2 & R3) to look forward to. Maybe we got lucky with the way the draft unfolded, but either way good job ML and scouting team!

Good Q, ty.

I’m of the belief that the team is thin all over (agree with Underhill on that). Given the team’s propensity to draft high RAS guys I don’t think they had Mayer as high as many boards….he’d have been one I’d have wanted if not going d-line.

I also may have taken a flyer on Levis, as I’m not as high on Carr as most. Liked the young man chosen by KC more than Bresee, personally, as well.

I do think they had a couple guys in the cloud there (DA even said so in his presser), think they went with positional value, and I really do get that. After sleeping on it I’m less upset as I 💯 believe it is/was our thinnest position on the team.

I’m not a fan of DA as a head coach but I have full respect for him as a defensive guy, so that also makes me trust the pick a bit more.
I’m just genuinely curious if folks think he was BPA.

Either way I hope the young man excels and has a great career!
From the presser it was clear to me that the other player was the Clemson De. They may have taken him over Bresee. But after further review, Bresee is a better fit because he can play De if needed and is good at it. He’s a guy they’ll move around on the line strategically. He’s got freakish size and athleticism. I know that gets said a lot. But he really does. He’s got point guard quickness in a centers body :) BPA doesn’t matter but he probably was.
