N/S Tom Pelissero:Rams Give Matthew Stafford Permission to Speak with Other Teams (27 Viewers)

This is a team that won their division, won a road playoff game, and lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champs by 1 score.

But they understand moving on from old players with big contracts better than Mickey with 4 years without a playoff appearance.

If traded he'd be owed $70m over 2 years. That seems like an ok deal as a free agent for a player of his ability if you were on the cusp of winning but lacked a QB. But to give up a 1st round pick to then have to pay that seems extreme. Maybe a team like the Steelers could do that since their 1st rounder is at 21, but it still seems to rich for me.

This hurts us because Carr's trade value goes down. Any slight chance that we had to trade him just decreased significantly. Which QB would you rather trade for if you were the Jets, Giants, Raiders, etc?
I would definitely take Carr for the 5th rounder it would likely cost over Stafford for a 1st. The money owed to them is comparable, and with Carr you don’t have to worry about him retiring in a season.

Stafford is considerably cheaper. In 2025, he’s owed $27m vs $40m for Carr. He’s also due $58m over the next two years compared to $90m for Carr.

He may want some new money if he gets traded, but I don’t think any team will give him $90m+ for two years.
