N/S Tom Pelissero:Rams Give Matthew Stafford Permission to Speak with Other Teams (18 Viewers)

I would definitely take Carr for the 5th rounder it would likely cost over Stafford for a 1st. The money owed to them is comparable, and with Carr you don’t have to worry about him retiring in a season.
Is Carr a guy that’s going to put a potential contender over the top? I’m not sure Stafford is at this point but he’s certainly more accomplished.

Stafford is considerably cheaper. In 2025, he’s owed $27m vs $40m for Carr. He’s also due $58m over the next two years compared to $90m for Carr.

He may want some new money if he gets traded, but I don’t think any team will give him $90m+ for two years.
Stafford's option bonuses come with him to the new team if he's traded, so his cap number is $33.5m for 2025 and $37.5 in 2026. If he's cut by the Rams, I believe they have to eat those option bonuses on top of his prorated bonuses as dead money. That gives them an incentive to get a trade done rather than cut him.

The Rams should have to pay those cap charges either way since they paid him the money in 2023. Usually the charges go against the team that spends the money. A new team would only have cap charges of $27m and $31m the next two years to cover the remaining salary and roster bonuses on his contract.

If the Saints were just a QB away from the playoffs then Stafford would be perfect. But on a team with as many huge gaping holes as the Saints he’d just be another giant backloaded contract the team really can’t afford.

We can do this!

As long as we have a roster of only 25 players each playing O, D, and ST's.

I was under the impression that while the option bonuses were guaranteed, they were paid year to year. Like something in between a signing bonus and a roster bonus. But now messing with the numbers it appears you're right. I need to understand the whole point of option bonuses because it's unclear how they differ from the other two. Thanks for the heads up.

This hurts us because Carr's trade value goes down. Any slight chance that we had to trade him just decreased significantly. Which QB would you rather trade for if you were the Jets, Giants, Raiders, etc?
There are no teams trading for Carr.... regardless who is available....

At this point if we were to trade Carr it's for salary relief. Nobody on God's green earth would give us anything close to a 2nd for Carr much less a 1. I don't think it diminishes his value. His value isn't as high as Carr thinks it is anyways.

Deja Vu again. Sounds like the mentality when Allen got hired. Time to do it right and go all in on a Kellen Moore built roster.

Nobody is trading for Carr

Carr and Stafford shouldn't be talked about in the same sentence. I know we're comparing contracts but if we're talking about talent the two aren't in the same league. Stafford is a likely HoFer and he's still one of the best in the League. Carr could be in the Hall of Okay.

This makes it pretty clear how bad Carr's contract is for this year and next. $40 million this year and $50 million next year. It's just distasteful to pay Carr that much more than Stafford. Not that Stafford would make sense for us right, but it makes it clear how little sense Carr makes for this team in this position with that contrat.
