Taysom Hill isn't just driving the offseason hype train. He's kicked everyone else off of it, put a warp engine on it, and pointed it toward Canton, Ohio.

And J.T. Barrett has a fair amount of buzz and support, too.

We always love the young guys we haven't seen because we have no proof that they aren't HOF players yet. Hope is a good thing.

So I suspect that most Saints fans hope that Hill and Barrett make the team. Which means that we are actually hoping that Tom Savage does not.

And that makes me a little sad for him. I suspect that 95% of us (myself included) would not recognize Tom Savage if we saw him at the grocery store. I don't even know where he went to college. But I'm still effectively hoping for him to lose his job, solely because I am excited by the other applicants for the position.

Football is a business, and may the best man win. I get it. But before training camp starts and we all formally join team Hill or team Barrett, I tip my hat to Mr. Savage. Here's hoping that he makes Payton's decision incredibly hard.

After reading that, I kind of like the signing. Seems he's come in and played well many times, but just keeps getting bad breaks. He's a lot younger than I thought as well. I had him confused with Shaub. At the very least, he seems a very good backup if not heir apparent.

+ 100%

He's a Saint and since he's a Saint, I'm pulling for him. He hasn't done anything in a black and gold uniform to give us reason to be down on him. He doesn't carry a heavy price tag. And he does have one thing over Hill (and Barrett). He's played in actual NFL regular season games as a quarterback. When is the last time Sean Payton went into the season with a back-up QB with no NFL game experience? ...never.

Now, that could change of course. For all 3 QBs behind Drew on the depth chart, this entire offseason is a man-to-man-to-man competition. And like you said, may the best man win. Of course the fan favorite is Hill. Uber-athletic and obviously a real football player having shown up several times on special teams for us. However, that does not give him the upper hand in this competition. Trust is the key. In other words, who does Payton, Carmichael, and Lombardi trust to come off the bench and give us the best chance at winning a game in case of an undesirable event (which I will not say nor type)?

Like it or not, Savage is our #2 until somebody beats him out for that job. It could happen, and that would be fine in my book as it means that (likely Hill) has shown enough to get the job over a more experienced QB. Also, like the OP states... if that does happen, I hope that Tom Savage gave him all the competition he could handle.

I would probably recognize Savage by his stat line.

I’m all for every player on our roster being quality but there’s nothing about Savage’s nfl career to get hopeful about. But maybe he just needed to get out of Houston and get with a system like Payton’s. We’ll see - but 57% 5/7 isn’t giving me optimism.

Whether it's Savage or any other QB, it's not too late for him to break out. Better coaching, conditioning, medicine , and OL technique are keeping QB's in the game longer and longer. Look at Peyton, !Favre, Eli, Rivers, Brees, and many more, having some of their best seasons in their mid 30's and later. Many just keep getting smarter and craftier as they age. I have honestly not seen Savage play enough to gage his talent, but if he's a QB, and is not over 35, I will never say never. To tell you the truth, I don't have a dog in the hunt. Whoever comes out on top, good for them.

If Savage came in and lit the place on fire, displayed a command of the offense both in game action and in the meeting room, I don't see Payton ignoring that. May the best man win. Looking forward to seeing what we actually have in this QB group.

I'm looking forward to the preseason battle between the 3 of them for what is likely 2 spots on the regular roster. Maybe only 1 if Hill wins the backup job and Barrett moves to the PS.

But however it works out, I'm sure we'll keep the best player(s) for our team and it will be fun to watch.

Savage has nowhere to go but up. Truly the only flaw I see in him is his sloth-like progression. Does anyone else see any other flaws aside from injury concerns? He can make all the throws so there's definitely still potential

Did Chase Daniel have regular season experience before becoming the backup? Honest question.

My brother in law is a huge Texans fan, and has season tix. Have watched Savage in person. He was terrible in Houston. That’s not to say he can’t turn it around, but he was absolutely abysmal with the Texans.

You're right he does have NFL experience. Granted his NFL experience went so poorly that the Texans decided to let him walk but yeah sure he has experience.

I will say this, it's pretty impressive that he managed to fumble the ball more often than he threw an interception.
