Video Tree offers his retrospective on the Ricky Williams trade (1 Viewer)

I’m glad he bagged on Iron Mike. The iron era sucked, no offense, SR. Lol

Wow! No clue we tried to get up there to get Peyton or Ryan the preceding year.

Remember that day like it was yesterday , I was all for the trade after the years of misery I was just happy someone was trying atleast instead of the same old same old.... granted looking back it was an absolute failure big time

I'll admit, I was all for this trade too. Had shades of a Ditka/Walter Payton partnership in New Orleans. It was also an era where fans weren't as educated on the importance of draft picks, so I was fully on board.

When I heard we traded up for Ricky, I was ECSTATIC. Then I learned what we gave up to get him, and it immediately threw cold water on my emotions. Remember thinking "he BETTER be the next coming of Walter Payton."

He wasn't, but I don't think coaching or playcalling did him any favors. Ricky balled out for the Saints and I never held his draft cost against him. I would've liked to have kept him, but when we drafted Deuce, the handwriting was on the wall. I'm sure the rest of the league read that handwriting too. Honestly, I'm amazed we got what we did for Ricky, and Ricky balled out for Miami, ensuring we got that conditional first. I've got nothing but GOOD memories of Ricky Williams, despite the wedding dress. But even that told me the dude didn't have an ego problem.

Didn’t we get 2 number ones back when we traded him to Miami? Seems like we did. If I’m remembering correctly, it wasn’t as bad as it’s made out to be considering the return we got a few years later.
Those picks became Charles Grant (who still can't afford to feed his kids) and Jonathan Sullivan. Sorry, just puked a little.

It was really not as huge of a failure as it seems. We got back 2 1st rounders when we traded RW and Ditka said if we stayed where we were, we were drafting Cade McNown.

You can add Kyle Turley to the partnership as well. Ditka said when he drafted Jimbo Covert #1 overall in 1983
the Bears fortunes began to change. Ditka was trying to build the Saints the same way. Unfortunately for us
Turley wasn't quite as good as Covert.

Not only that but Ricky was in the top 20 all time for rushing yards when he retired. If the NFL didn't test for weed back then there's a good chance he would have been top 10, possibly a hall of famer. He was a very good running back. It was just stupid of Ditka to tell the whole world who he wanted and how much he would pay.

Seeing that most of us who remember that trade were younger back then and most of us all were all for it. The week leading up to that trade, I had Ricky as my wallpaper on my computer. Even the news paper had a background of him during the day of the draft. The night before the first preseason game, it literally felt like the day before Christmas
