Article Trust Sean Payton for the Saints Winning. (1 Viewer)

its definitely not the same going into july knowing #9 wont be there at camp. this season definitely doesn't have that same excitement for me that i've previously had.

now granted, come training camp, i'll be reading every single TC post in the threads. i will watch every single saints preseason game. and will still say saints are going 16-0 until they lose a game then its 15-1, and so on.

i'm all for being behind winston if he wins the battle. and hill if he wins. i dont have a preference, if hill wins, stop fumbling, if winston wins, stop throwing so many INTs.

other than that. this season i dont think i'll be as "depressed" if the saints lose. because i'm really not expecting a deep playoff run when they're going into july with a qb battle. just too many kinks to work out, especially losing some of the guys the saints lost.

if they're above the .500 mark at seasons end, thats a win for this offseasons issues to me. playoffs? even better. but i'm not gonna say they're going to the SB like i had hopes for since 2009 season ended.
And yet, almost every season after 2009 we've had hope the team can win it all and they haven't delivered. Maybe the key is to not have that hope at all.

For me, I disregard practically everything Payton has achieved thus far and look at this season as a fresh assessment of his skillset because I don't know what kind of coach he is without Drew Brees.
Seems a little extreme to me. We've seen what Payton can do with guys like Teddy, Taysom, Winston, and even McCown when it came down to it. He even adjusted the offense to better suit Brees as he aged. Having Brees has obviously been incredible for this team, but it's not fair to completely ignore how good of a coach Payton has been. Yes, he's no doubt benefited from a HOF QB, but he has still been a heck of a coach for us.

I want to know how good he is without Drew Brees on the roster. That's a fair inquiry.

CSP deserves a ton of credit. He was hired and then brought in an average QB to run HIS offense. People act like Brees was some HOF QB when SD cast him aside for their newly drafted prototypical QB. Brees was 30-29 with a 62% completion rate and had a benching for Flutie. He also was 7-9 in CSP's stolen 2012 season while going back to his 62% completion rate without CSP. His lowest with CSP as HC was 64% in 2006. So without CSP, Brees was a NFL QB with a losing record and a near league average completion rate. Whereas CSP was 0-3 without Brees in the 3 games he didn't play prior to 2019 (WK 17 2009, WK 3 2015, WK 17 2018) and then went 8-1 without Brees in 2019/2020 giving him a 8-4 record, with 2 of those games being meaningless Wk 17 games.

CSP extra credit: He turned Tony Romo into an NFL QB.

You know, it's probable that both Payton and Brees will be in the HOF. We can debate who made who all day, but maybe they were just both great and made an awesome pair. Can't write off 15 years of success in an instant. That said, the road might get a little rocky starting this season. No one knows, but losing a future HOF QB isn't an easy thing for any coach to overcome. I have confidence that Payton will get the most out of whoever he has to work with. I think he's earned that trust.

The feeling around this team is different but we still have one of the best coaches in the league. CSP has always been one to put players in schemes to benefit them. I trust him not only being that he was 8-1 the last two years without Drew, but because he had Luke McCown darn near lead us a win while having his best game of his career. With Jameis and Taysom, he will find a way to utilize them both, the playbook is wide open and I can't wait to see what happens.

I feel the same way. He has earned my trust, I just hope he stays committed to the run game, especially in the playoffs....

Sean went 7-9 for 3 seasons WITH Drew. No telling what next season will look like. A number of things conspire to make the team finally come to that can we kicked down the road a few times. It will be interesting.
